Today we’d like to introduce you to Dani Cowan.
Dani, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I actually never had planned on becoming a photographer, but rather fell into by a stroke of fate. While studying pre-medicine in college, I took a solo trip to Uganda, Africa. Having grown up around other women photographers (my grandma and mom both had a passion for it), I always loved photography in general and brought my camera along on the trip. It was during that time, I fell head over heels for travel and storytelling. I realized the impact that my photos had and couldn’t look away. I started shooting humanitarian photography while abroad, and once back in the states with an eagerness to begin my photography business, weddings just made sense. My mom owns a wedding design + decor firm; I knew the different types of linens for different sized reception tables, how to tie chair sashes, a general wedding day timeline, all by the time I was 11. The wedding industry is something I grew up in and I can basically double as a day of coordinator, dress tailor, and MC by now! It was an effortless transition to start photographing weddings!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not! But you know the old saying, “Nothing worth it is ever easy.” I’d say the hardest transition for me was moving from Texas to Colorado and having to start my business all over again! I definitely underestimated how tight-knit the Colorado destination wedding industry was and found it hard, in general, to break into, especially in a location in the mountains where everything is so seasonal and people tend to not trust new vendors as much. If you are either relocating or totally new to an area, my best piece of advice is to get out there and make REAL relationships! People don’t want to refer businesses who want something from them, they want to refer people they know, trust, and are friends with! I must have had 20 coffee dates planned at some point. And more than that, offer them something! Vendor relationships should be mutually beneficial. I did headshots, collaborated with them on projects, etc. Be a good friend, loyal to your community, and serve people well!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dani Cowan Photography – what should we know?
I’m a fine art wedding photographer, specializing in Colorado mountaintop weddings + destination weddings around the globe! I happily share the best day of people’s lives with them in some of the most beautiful scenery known to man- documenting, laughing, crying, and celebrating the love between them along the way. I strive to tell each couple’s individual love story in a way that is so uniquely them, and I do so by artistically creating romantic settings and authentic moments through an even mix of soft direction and photojournalism. My style has been described as timeless, romantic, natural, and elegant, and my couples tend to share in my love for natural light, breathtaking landscapes, precious details, and of course, adventure. While I live, play, and work in the mountains of Colorado, my zeal for travel has taken me all over the world to photograph love and that is something I am known for in general- having the travel bug! There is no location too far off for me to come and help document love being shared.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
Oh yes! I am HUGE into mindset work, law of attraction, manifesting abundance, etc. Anything and everything that involves becoming my highest self, I’m there. I love the Jin Sincero books and books in the like; I’m always reading one kind of “self-help” book or another.
