Meet Trailblazer Diana Schmitt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Schmitt.

Diana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It’s been five years since I moved the US from Ukraine, four years since I learned English, and three years since I got my Barbering license. About two years ago, I discovered and fell in love with curly and textured hair, and I began renting a chair on my own about half a year ago. It’s definitely been a journey.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes, it’s been challenging, but we all know you grow by facing your fears. I have to say, it’s much more difficult to earn the trust of “curly people” because their experiences with stylists haven’t always been the best. Many curly-haired people don’t trust a stylist who doesn’t have curly hair. My hair isn’t curly, but I found my passion and followed it! Another challenge is to not compare yourself to all the other talented stylists who are more skilled and experienced. My advice to other women who are starting their own enterprises is to find people who are the best at what they do and look to them for your own inspiration, admiration, and personal growth. And remember to keep supporting and complimenting each other. You can do it!

We’d love to hear more about Curls Unlimited.
I am a curl shaper, painter, and nurturer. I enjoy working with all curl types – wavy, curly, and ethnic hair. I pride myself on attention to detail and providing an excellent experience for the person in my chair. I love sharing all the tips I know with my guests. It’s an incredible honor to help women of all ages embrace, and sometimes for the first time in their lives, fall in love with their curls. I’m so inspired to stand next to women who are changing society’s standards of beauty and breaking stereotypes.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
It is crucial to have a supportive mentor when you are first starting out, and I’m so grateful that I had a few of them. But most importantly, listen to your heart and follow it!
