Meet Trailblazer Donnyale Ambrosine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donnyale Ambrosine.

Donnyale, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Culturs – the global multicultural magazine started online in 2014 and in print in 2018. As an afro-Latina who grew up in 7 countries spanning 4 continents and parents from South and Central America, I’m passionate about telling cross-cultural stories. It’s a lifestyle publication that celebrates cross-culture identity. Our readers straddle culture race, ethnicity, nation or location, which means they are culturally-fluid and have a hidden diversity (that’s embodied by the missing “e” in our name). Culturs uses media, products and experiences to enhance belonging for cross-cultural identities because everyone should feel like they matter. We reach about 1.26 million readers through our web, digital, and print publications and email newsletter with about 500,000. Our team consists of 50 experts, staff and contributors across the globe. Culturs print magazine can be found in almost 2000 stores across the US. 100% of proceeds support cross-cultural education around the globe.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a great journey, and as with any business, takes a lot of work, tenacity and vision. As we go into three years in print, people often ask “are you profitable yet?: Which always makes me chuckle. The majority of small businesses don’t make money for the first five years, but often people go into entrepreneurship thinking that within a year or two, there will be a meteoric rise. We’ve grown so fast and experienced so much, but there’s still a long way to go. This doesn’t mean you can’t make a profit faster than average, but it’s prudent to have a plan that will support you through the first five years. I’m pleased with our accomplishments and expansion.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Culturs — The Global Multicultural Magazine for cross cultural identity – what should we know?
Culturs is a historic publication – the first of its kind, and the perfect publication for our changing world. Our focus on 21st Century diversity includes immigrants, Third Culture Kids, Expats, Refugees and Migrants – important populations whose unique voices can add so much to our global discourse. I’m proud that we represent and can give voice to this population. We’ve been fortunate to partner with NBC Universal, Turner, Coke, Colorado State University, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and more. This brings value to what we do, and shows the importance of this growing audience.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Print media often is characterized as being dead, when in actuality, those who understand it can thrive. With the amount of information coming at us from every angle: digital signs on the highway, buzzing from our watches, smart phones, television, internet, radio — our bodies and our brains need a break. Print provides that respite — at Culturs, we call it the “luxury spa experience” to the fast food of digital. Though it’s important to be in all of the digital spaces, the tactile feel, exquisite storytelling and vibrant visuals of our print product give people an excuse to slow down. For women, this is essential. Women should take their inherent nurturing abilities and gut instincts to give the public what others can’t.
