Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Wishall.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After two years of working in a pharmacy & an in-person pharmacy school interview, I decided to withdraw my application & change college majors. The summer after this difficult decision I worked as a personal care attendant for a 17-year-old girl who had Cerebral Palsy. It was through working with her, attending her physical therapy sessions, & assisting her with facilitated stretching that I became inspired by the idea of helping others reach their potential through the physical body.
I started this inquiry by receiving a degree in Exercise Science & with a full-time internship with a physical therapist who did myofascial release. Through many hours of learning & working with a myriad of clients, I became fascinated with the fascia.
This led me to become a Certified Rolfer. Rolfing Structural Integration is a form of manual bodywork that works with the fascia, your soft tissue skeleton & body’s largest sensory organ, to help the body come back into natural alignment. I am continually inspired by this work & by my client’s results, from the very physical results of releasing pain & increasing range-of-motion to them experiencing greater confidence, finally feeling like themselves, the ability to stand firm in the boundaries & who they are.
I am also teaching the Art of Feminine Presence & am continuing to move more in the direction of group facilitation & workshops helping others live of life of greater integrity by connecting with their body & the present moment.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting your own business is one of the greatest personal & spiritual growth opportunities you will ever have. It amplifies & shines light on all of your insecurities & self-doubts. The first two years of starting my business were particularly challenging for me. Going to networking events to meet people & sharing about my work gave me tremendous anxiety. Even though I would go to the events in the hopes of meeting prospective clients or referral partners, I’d show up & immediately shrink, staying at the perimeters of the room holding onto the fears of worrying about ‘what if I don’t know what to say?’, ‘no one talks to me’, etc.
The best advice I could give to young women would be to before ever going out to an event, meeting, even before sitting down to your computer to write out a proposal or email, connect with yourself first. Allow yourself the gift of 5 minutes to connect with your breath, do a body scan, ground into your feet, & connect with your WHY. Cultivating a practice of checking in like this on a consistent basis will build your self-confidence & conviction in your work, enabling you to show up with greater presence & ease.
We’d love to hear more about Wishall Wellness.
Your body is what allows you to flourish.
I believe that your mind, body, and spirit are connected. When you take care of your body and enable it to function optimally, inevitably, other aspects of your life are affected. This may happen incrementally or at times, you may experience a dramatic shift. This shift may show up as greater self-confidence and the ability to no longer tolerate a toxic, unfulfilling relationship or job, or other situations that do not fully serve or support you and are in fact, a detriment to you.
I help my clients feel more at ease and confident in their bodies. I help them release pain and the old postural and mental patterns that are keeping them stuck, small, and limited. Through our work together, my clients come back to their own true alignment, which enables them to feel stronger, more capable, more centered, and embodied.
I support my clients by working with the WHOLE PERSON. I do this through Rolfing Structural Integration, small group work with women (the Art of Feminine Presence), & embodiment coaching.
I work with a wide range of clients in my private practice, males and females ages ranging from 9 to 95 years old. I work with Crossfitters, yogis, dancers, musicians, casually active folks, & many others in a variety of categories. I feel fortunate to be able to work with such a wide diversity of clients. Some of the issues my clients come to me with include: pain or limited range of motion in their shoulder, scoliosis, hip pain, sciatica, low and mid-back pain, migraines, head and neck tension, and general complaints of feeling tight and constricted.
One of my favorite ways of working with clients is through the Rolfing 10-Series. Generally, clients who go through this process with me, are drawn to my work as they feel disconnected from their body, ‘out of whack’, & simply not aligned. Usually, they will have a few aches or discomforts that are specific to them, but their intention for receiving Rolfing is not to ‘chase pain symptoms’, but instead, to allow their body to come back into natural alignment & deepen their own connection to their body.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I find that often women in leadership roles feel they have to take on a more masculine role in order to be taken seriously. I have several clients who work in male-dominated industries. They often experience the need to work twice as hard as their male colleagues simply to prove themselves or have been accused of being a ‘bitch’ when they have been direct in their communication & firm in the conviction of their needs. In the business world, in most industries, we haven’t been shown many examples of what it is like to do business in a feminine way. As female leaders, how do we get to express our femininity while still commanding the respect & attention we deserve? Many women don’t feel safe connecting to their feminine essence when they are in a work situation. I feel strongly about helping women connect with this aspect of themselves & not only finding the safety in it, but also how much better life feels when they get to simply BE in their feminine power, release the need to ‘prove’ anything, & receive the recognition they deserve.
