Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Wendling.
Heidi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My husband, John, and I moved from Columbus, Ohio, to Denver in March of 2011. We were newlyweds taking a risk of chasing dreams and moving to the beautiful Mile High City. I was in transition of working remote for Abercrombie & Fitch Corporate and starting a brand new role with a local law firm.
I always had real estate in the back of my mind, but knew it would be a tough go trying to find clients when I didn’t even know how to navigate our new home! I decided to put it on hold for a while and embraced my time with the team at the law firm of which I grew personally and professionally on so many levels. Fast forward nearly two years and we were expecting our first born, Liv. I decided it was “now or never” and pursued my wish of becoming a licensed Realtor. The law firm was extremely supportive in me completing my classes, passing the exam and ultimately becoming a new mom. It was perfect timing for me to transition into my new career and hit the ground running, literally!
It was not an easy road trying to grow my own business, but I kept at it and with the support of my incredible husband, I finally started to see my efforts pay off nearly two years later. My first year was what I like to call “a wash”. I made nothing and worked my tail end off while bringing our little Liv to all of my appointments as we couldn’t afford daycare or a nanny. She was such a great baby and am blessed I could have her there with me. In my second year with Your Castle Real Estate, I received two awards. One for producing enough to be a part of the Gold Club and another from Most Improved as I increased my sales by 600% from the prior year. It was the boost I needed to know I could make it in the profession. Now, just over seven years into my career, of which I LOVE, I am one of the top producing agents in Denver, growing my own team, The Wendling Group, have built endless relationships with new clients and friends, seen some of the most beautiful homes in the city, received awards from Top 40 Under 40, Top Producing Agent recognized by 5280 Magazine, Platinum and President’s Club with Your Castle Real Estate. I would never be able to do what I do without the confidence and support of my loving husband and three beautiful children. My career has lit a fire inside that brings out the competitive nature in me and provide my clients with exceptional service and lifelong relationships. Real estate really is the perfect fit for me and am so grateful for the healthy balance I have found to be successful in a profession I’m obsessed with be there for my wonderful family.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. My biggest piece of advice would be to not give up. If you love it and compliments who you are, never give up. You are one of many fish in the sea, so find out how you are different from the others and believe in yourself.
I was told in the very beginning of my career that consistency will pay off. I whole heartily agree with this. Just because it didn’t work the first time you tried, don’t stop. I may need to reach out to a potential client over five times before I hear anything back. Find ways to relate with others. People appreciate knowing you are a full-time mother and also have priorities that may fall ahead of your career. It creates respect and ways to bond with one another.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a full-time residential Realtor in the Denver Metro and Front Range areas. I go over and beyond for my clients in the effort to provide exceptional service and a smooth transition from one home to the next. My team, The Wendling Group, has a slogan of “Trust, Value, Comfort”. You can trust that we will see through our fiduciary responsibilities as your Realtor to bring endless value to the experience of buying and selling. We put your best interest at the forefront of the transaction and help you find comfort in your dream home.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I do find at times it can be tough to get hired by a new client when they learn I am a full-time mother to three children while managing a business that is truly 24/7. I just have to share with them my success story and how I have embraced my career while juggling my kiddos. I have never not been able to help my clients and understand this market isn’t going to wait for me to be available. If the right place comes up, I assure my clients I will make it work and will hold their hand through the entire process. From the time they start their search to going under contract and getting to the closing table, I am available and eager to be a part of the process.
Being a parent is the best experience I have had in my life and makes me work that much harder to set a positive example for my kids in a strong work ethic and understanding priorities.
