Meet Trailblazer Jen Essex

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Essex.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always been in the hospitality industry with a focus on Food and Beverage. I went to pastry school in 2006 at the acclaimed French Pastry School in Chicago. I launched Ruby Jean Patisserie in January 2018 and have been growing steadily. I was able to quit my job eight months after launching to focus on the business. I currently bake out a commercial kitchen and deliver to my clients. I also work with other local business, collaborating and partnerships are extremely important to the Ruby Jean Patisserie brand. A brick and mortar is the goal!

Has it been a smooth road?
Starting a business isn’t easy if it were then everyone would do it. Learning to protect my brand was a struggle at first, but remembering why you set standards in the first place.
Every day is a learning lesson, and if you don’t know the answer to something find the right person that does know the answer. I’ve learned to outsource things that I am not comfortable doing, like bookkeeping and accounting.

We’d love to hear more about Ruby Jean Patisserie.
Ruby Jean Patisserie is a Denver based dessert catering company. We utilize European technique and American inspiration. Priding ourselves on using local and organic as much as possible. We love working in the wedding industry to help create memorable dessert experiences for our couples. RJP creates amazing wedding cakes, dessert bars, and works with other local businesses. Every month we focus on a different nonprofit or charity in Colorado to give back to.

We pride ourselves in the level of customer service we provide. We are not just selling cupcakes. We are offering an experience that you won’t find with every business. I want to make sure that all of my clients are happy from the moment they interact with me through our entire client/ owner relationship; their happiness is my #1 priority.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe there is an opportunity out there for everyone. You have to get out there and hustle. There are so many support groups for women too, we have a lot to take advantage of and the sky is the limit.
