Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie B Myers.
Jessie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is not simple or short. The story of how I scratched my way to my dream career is quite long and dramatic, full of twists and turns, the highest highs and the lowest lows. I always had a drive and passion too because the best at my craft, hairstyling. I see the industry as a playground for me to express my creative artistic side on a beautiful canvas of hair. As a young stay-at-home mom, I could not silence my urge to grow so I attended an inner-city beauty school in the heart of Atlanta. This was all I could afford due to the lack of support from my then-husband. I finished the program at Chattahoochee College and immediately began advanced education through various mentors. I was educated by highly successful salon owners and fellow stylists. My need to learn the latest trends and advance my knowledge of everything from Cut/Color/Style/extensions never ceases. It’s the obsession to be the best and learn the most for each and every client’s need is what I attribute my success to. I have since built my own thriving salon business. My client relationships are the most important thing to me.
Fast forward to nearly 12 years in the industry, I feel that my business and career is only getting better. I feel the same excitement for the industry as the day I started. Not only am I a successful stylist, but I am also a patriot, a loving wife and a mother to FIVE wonderful children. Our lives are full but I feel exceptionally grateful to be able to also LOVE my career.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This road has never been smooth for me! I have scratched my way here through adversity. I wasn’t raised with a silver spoon. Nothing was handed to me. My ex-husband did not support me going to school but I figured out my own way! I was constantly searching for education even AFTER school, I juggled babies and school and apprenticeship, more babies and learning business skills, business building, networking and football, soccer, volleyball and baseball oh my! A divorce, a time of sadness, a rebirth and finally found true love. All of these things have made me the businesswoman and stylist that I am today. If I could give advice to other women the biggest thing, I could tell them is to follow a true passion. Living out your destiny and who you are truly meant to be is the most important thing for true happiness. My soul is filled daily by my kids, my husband, my 2 dogs and a cat! And even shockingly, my business!!! Always be open to where you can find information along your journey. I have had many mentors along the way each providing snip bits of helpful information for me to be a better businesswoman or stylist. I always surround myself with positive influencers, I actually learned that lesson the hard way when I unknowingly involved myself with a not-so-positive evil witch!!!
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
As a stylist, I feel it is most important to bring back the overall customer experience. Too many times, I have heard stories of hairstylists that don’t listen or pay attention, who rush or skip steps, who don’t give the client the personal attention they are paying for!! The basis of my business is simple, take care of each and every client, establishing a relationship where they can trust me, my knowledge and my service. I constantly educate myself on advanced techniques. I am still a student, of my craft and life. I am always trying to better myself and my business. My color knowledge at this point is quite substantial, I am proud of that!
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
My life as a child was not glamorous. I had a simple American family of a dad, mom, two brothers, food to eat and a roof over my head. We were a middle-class family in Littleton, Colorado. I thought we were wealthy but later found out that wasn’t the case. My assumption is that my relationships with my close family filled me up enough to feel rich. I want to give my children more than I had access to and so far succeeding! I watched my parents work hard and play harder and I have developed that attitude myself.
