Meet Trailblazer Joni Winkler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joni Winkler.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My business partner and I were colleagues at another firm and weren’t wild about the culture. So we sort of borrowed from the Jerry McGuire story: we wanted to be able to spend more time building relationships with our clients and on their projects. Not just sell it, bill it, get it out the door, get on to the next sale/customer. We truly wanted to have the space and latitude build relationships with clients.

We thought: fewer clients, more work /time with each client to truly partner. (i.e. the jerry McGuire “memo…”)

So we did it – the first week we were officially boom, I had a call from one of my existing clients that happened to be a woman, and happened to be at a very well-known, fast food brand – the rest is history. We launched 16 years ago…today 2/4/2004!

Has it been a smooth road?
Our ownership is a 50/50 partnership – two smart, strong-willed women are bound to bump heads when it comes to how and when we grow and evolve. My best advice to women is to pause, and remember LESS IS MORE. Less opinion, less emailing, less emotion. When there is a difference of opinion internally, focus on really listening – taking a beat before your push your thoughts/ideas and come back to the conversation when you both can look objectively at what is best for the business, not just getting a “win” or doing things “your way” or… (and this is the death toll for any business) “the way we’ve always done it.”

We’d love to hear more about Boom Broadcast Media Relations.
We are in communications. We specialize in placing news (radio, TV news stories and interviews) and cause related content (think Public Service Announcements) on TV, Radio, online and out of home. What we’re most proud of is our ability to cut to the chase, be completely honest with our council and recommendations to clients. Because we are a small business, we are virtual in terms of our organization, we don’t have to compromise on what will work and what won’t. We can focus on what will be a success for our clients, deliver it, and then repeat. When our clients work with us – “Boom, it’s done.”

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
One hundred percent: yes. My parents were great examples of how to navigate work and life. I am the only girl with four brothers…but I was never “the princess” or offered different activities than my brothers. The expectations and encouragement was the same – playing sports, chores, curfews, allowance…all the same in our family. My dad was in advertising and always encouraged me on that path. My mom went back to school when we were all in grade school to finish her nursing degree and worked nights so she was home to send us off to school. I didn’t just think I could do anything, I believed it. I still do.
