Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Metzler.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been a mover all my life– I have an extensive background in dance (Ballet, Jazz, Tap, etc.), and have always had a passion for sharing my love for movement with others. I unexpectedly found the transformational power of Yoga while suffering from severe anxiety from a corporate work setting. I quickly became certified so I could share this amazing practice of movement and healing with others. I was working for my studio’s previous owner in early 2018 when she asked if I was interested in purchasing the studio.
I became the owner of Foundation Movement & Yoga (which was Verve Movement Studio at the time) on July 1st, 2018. The studio came with a wonderful community and team of instructors that play such a big role in the safe, uplifting culture we provide that allows people from all walks of life to explore and grow in their movement.
Over the last year, we’ve made a name for ourselves as a more gentle, all-encompassing movement studio. We attract a diverse set of clients looking to strengthen the foundation in their body so they can grow and explore their true movement potential. Which is what inspired our rebrand to Foundation Movement & Yoga on June 1st, 2019.
We’re currently in a period of growth coming out of our rebrand. By offering a diverse range of classes in an approachable setting, we’re hoping to expand our reach to all of Longmont and the surrounding areas—creating a happier and more mindful community.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business is such a challenging journey. Some days, I wonder how I’m still at it– I think I come from my passion for sharing movement, and my stubborn head that wants things done my way. ☺
There were several challenges that came up during the change of hands from the previous owner to me– it was a rocky transition and had to gain the trust of my clients before I could make big changes to the studio to fit my vision. Truthfully, I didn’t have to do it that way, but if your clients don’t trust you and your vision, they’re more likely to leave.
I also noticed becoming a business owner was a lonely road. You eat, sleep, and breathe your business all day long– and the only people who understand are other business owners. I was fortunate enough to be friends with several local business owners and was able to talk to them about my struggles, get advice and recommendations, and also get some much-needed encouragement. Which is why I started a local business owners group on Facebook so we can all feel a little less alone and share resources/advice/words of encouragement with each other.
A piece of advice for young women looking to start their business journey is to stop believing that your age is preventing you from being successful. I kept myself from so many opportunities when I first became a business owner because I was afraid no one would take me seriously (I was 25 when I bought my business). What I realized is that people already have mad respect for you as a business owner with the guts to chase your dreams– they can still say no, but that’s really the worst of it. Don’t be afraid to command a room or ask for what you want. At the end of the day, age is just a number– your drive and intelligence will always outshine how many years you’ve been on this earth.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Foundation Movement & Yoga – what should we know?
Foundation Movement & Yoga is known for its more gentle, holistic approach to movement. Our ideal client is anyone looking for healthy, inspired movement on and off the mat. We’re here for the people just getting started, coming back after some time off, or those who are looking to re-connect with their bodies in a more mindful, nurturing way. We believe that the relationship you have with your body is the most important relationship you will ever have. You have to learn to listen to it and give it what it needs to keep it strong and healthy– just like your external relationships.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by strong, successful women who have taken me under their wing over the last few years. If you know anyone personally that will let you pick their brain, that is the best place to start.
But if you don’t have anyone close to you who can help, use the power of social media to help bridge the gap. I have reached out to people who are in a similar industry– but in a different city/state, so they don’t think I’m trying to steal their clients or secrets to success. Be prepared with your specific questions, and show respect for their time. Most people are willing to answer your questions as long as your not too vague or demanding of their time and energy.
