Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Koroneos.
Jordyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My mother is a photographer and I grew up with a camera constantly pointed at me and my little brother, so I quickly discovered my passion for photography at a young age. I would constantly borrow my mom’s camera and photograph whatever I could because I was completely fascinated by the idea of it and what it allowed me to create. But, after a while, my mom eventually wanted her camera back so I needed to make my own commitment to photography. My first major purchase was a Canon camera (7d mark ii) and I was so excited to be able to start my own photography journey.
Flash forward 12 years and I have made photography my full-time career. I work for a wonderful portrait studio and also volunteer my time and funds towards photography based international charity trips a few times a year.
However, I would not be the photographer I am today without my mentor, Sandy Puc’. She took me in at her studio at the young age of 17 and has supported me ever since. She has not only shaped me into a professional photographer, but she has also become my closest friend and travel companion. I cannot thank her enough for everything she has done for me. She has taken me all over the world and has ultimately taught me that my passion and skillset in photography can also be used to help others in need.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been extremely blessed to be able to pursue my passion and let it cover my bills and expenses. There were, of course, some struggles on the way, it would not be a journey without them.
I didn’t take the traditional college route because I decided to hop right into the photography field. When I was first starting, I knew there would potentially be financial risks because I didn’t start out with a college education. But, I was more concerned about doing what I love instead of settling. I think my biggest struggle was emotionally going a completely opposite direction than my friends, I would often question it because I felt like maybe I made the wrong decision. But, I worked really hard and ended up with an incredible job with and an incredible mentor to guide me through the professional photography world.
My advice for other young women is to do what you’re passionate about. Don’t let the fear of not going the traditional route stop you in pursuing your own dreams. Not everyone’s passions are the same, so we all have to take different roads to get to them.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a full-time Associate Photographer at Sandy Puc’ Photography. I specialize in capturing portraits, mostly of babies and younger children. On a daily basis, I photograph anywhere from 3-8 sessions a day. I love being able to provide families with portraits that they will cherish for their lives, I also love forming everlasting relationships with these clients and seeing their babies grow up in front of my eyes.
On top of working at a professional studio and what sets me apart from others is that I donate my time and resources to a few charities trips a year. What this entails is that we (my close travel companions) travel to different countries to film and photograph nonprofit organizations to promote the wonderful work they do. These trips have been so eye-opening for me, I’ve been able to experience so many different parts of the world that I could have never imagined. I have also been humbled and extremely appreciative of what I have here at home after seeing the struggles that others have to face on a daily basis. The work my friends and I do in other countries is what I am most proud of because I know that we are providing awareness for people in need.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Yes, photography has always played a huge role in my life, even when I was a young child and didn’t know how to operate a camera. As soon as my mom trusted me with her fancy camera, I was able to start on my own photography path. Photography has been one of the only professional fields that I have ever known, so I have been able to put all my time and focus on it and really become the best photographer that I can be.
