Today we’d like to introduce you to Kati Moser.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am the proud owner and photographer of Faith Photography by Kati! I relaunched my business 2 years ago after taking a break to take care of my oldest daughter. She is a very special eight-year-old who has a complex medical history. The few years I spent away from my camera reminded me how important pictures are and how short life is. As a parent of a special needs kid, you always feel like you are going a million miles an hour and never have time to just sit back and enjoy the little things. When I started my business back up, I wanted to make sure I was doing it for the right reason and providing my clients with something that would last them a lifetime. My business motto is “Life happens once, Capture it!” I firmly believe my work speaks to this! I love capturing the little moments on camera. I love the laughter between couples and families, the detailed shot of the freckles your 3-year-old may outgrow one, and getting that little nose scrunch a newly engaged couple exchanges. My passion is delivering a gallery the stirs up the exact emotion you were having in that time in your life. Photographs are a way to slow down a season that seems to fly by.
Though I love the paying client, I have a huge passion for giving back! I recently hosted a shoot to campaign for a photographer in Oregon who is spreading the message of inner beauty. I also love doing a shoot for parents who have special needs kids and may not be able to afford it because of medical bills. I just did a coffee shop shoot for a group of mom’s who all have kids with a complex medical diagnosis. It was an amazing day of spoiling them, letting them share their stories and knowing they aren’t alone. I feel like any business should be giving back to those around them. My passion and gift are photography so if I can use that to bless others when I may not have the money to do so, I will.
Owning a business and being a mom is not easy but it is so worth it. I love teaching my girls that hard work always pays off.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think anyone who has owned a small business can say that it is not for the faint of heart. My journey has not been a smooth road at all! I have had to stop and slow down more time than I ever imaged because I’ve had to refocus and put my children and family first. It is always hard knowing you have deadlines and that you should be working because your business is you and only you. I feel like I’m constantly learning and constantly redoing things to try and streamline my work to make it a little more of a smooth road.
The best advice I could give any business owner would be to have grace on yourself and to not compare yourself to others. You have no idea how their road was paved and you have no idea what season of life/business they are in. When you compare yourself, you are saying to yourself you are just like them when you are not. You should be saying you are going to become the greatest version of yourself that you can! Season change and so does your business. Have grace and just remember tomorrow is a new day! Strive to be a better you every day!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I consider myself a lifestyle photographer. I specialize in capturing emotion, feelings and the true you. I love when I get to first capture an engagement, then their wedding, followed by maternity and newborn and my favorite, watching littles grow! I pride myself in making my clients feel comfortable in front of the camera! I try my hardest to make them feel like they are showing up to their session with their new best friend who just so happens to have a camera in her hand. It helps them feel comfortable and relaxed and able to be the truest version of themselves. As a photographer, I am most proud of my ability to adapt to any situation. I can take a shy husband who complained the whole way to the shoot and has him laughing and smiling by the end. I have patients with the little kids who have special needs and I allow him to just be him. Even if that’s capturing him running through the grass with a new found rock, he just have to take home. I’m very laid back but take my job seriously. I want my clients to choose me not only for my work but also because of my passion and love for them. I put my heart and soul into each session and I feel like it really shines through when my clients open their galleries.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel like sometimes woman are too hard on themselves. We allow ourselves to fall into the comparison trap and allow others to tell us how to act and feel. We need to start by loving ourselves and lifting up others. Woman have just as many opportunities as men but we tend to be competitive and tear ourselves down. We need to look at other women who are successful and cheer them on! When we cheer others on it only makes us fight harder to be the one getting cheered on. I love the saying of the community over competition! If we build a strong community, then there is no need for competition and only room for all of us to grow! Stand tall and be proud to be a female business owner!
