Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Huey.
Katie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I know, to my core, that I am meant to be an entrepreneur. In the search for my niche, I have tried on a lot of ideas: a clothing line, a candle company, a leather bag company, and the ole freelance hustle.
I have always had so. many. ideas! I was stuck in idea-overload land for years. And not all of them worked. Heck, not all of them were even good ideas!
There were times when I truly had no idea what I was doing. I was paralyzed by perfection paralysis and fear. Entrepreneurship is freeing and exciting, and it can also be scary. But I just kept moving, kept searching for what it was that I was supposed to be doing.
I don’t feel like the dead ends mean that I have failed. I have learned and adapted to the challenges that entrepreneurship has thrown my way. That is a success in my book. This continual work toward mindset growth allowed me to take a step back, breath a little, and ask myself, “What do I truly enjoy? What am I *actually* good at?” Spoiler: it wasn’t making candles or sewing leather.
When I was in a place where I was able to get a bird’s eye view of everything I was working on, I realized that all of my ventures were rooted in one thing: the passion to conceptualize brands and develop business models with scalability.
So, I teamed up with my sister, who is perfect complementary partner, and we started The Global Creator Studio. Together, we value freedom and flexibility to build a life and business on our own terms, and we help other entrepreneurs who value the same.
Now, I wake up each day excited. I get to help our growing community break down barriers to their success and facilitate their growth in ways that they felt was only in their dreams. It’s an incredible thing!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My journey has been filled with a lot of dead ends, hard realities, and self-doubt. There have been days that extended into weeks where all I could do was sleep. When you’re an entrepreneur, you are constantly putting yourself and your ideas out there on the line to be judged, accepted, or rejected. It can be scary and exhausting!
There is this pervasive theme in the digital space that you need to “work less to earn more.” I think this is damaging, especially for those who are just starting out. Maybe this is true when you have momentum and you are able to automate most of your processes, but I think this is disingenuous for the realities of entrepreneurship.
It sells a false sense of ease, and entrepreneurship is anything but easy.
It’s work. A lot of work, especially when you are at the beginning of your journey. And it is *okay* not to be in love with the process all the time, but it is *not okay* to let that stop you from moving onward and upwards.
My ultimate advice is this: whatever it is that you are working on, whether or not it is your true passion or a fleeting idea that may not be around next week, give it your all. Take radical action. With action comes clarity, so do it now. As my mother once told me, “Start now, so that a month from now you are a month ahead instead of a month behind.”
We’d love to hear more about The Global Creator Studio.
The most common challenge we hear in our market is that they just have so many ideas, and they don’t know which one to pursue. And they all got into this gig for two reasons: flexibility and freedom. We can cheers to that!
So, we help them simplify their business and plan for growth through scalable offerings, ultimately awarding them both the flexibility and freedom they crave. We start by helping them narrow their focus on the one idea that brings them both the most joy and the most revenue. We believe that this is where the magic happens. We call this the “zone of genius”: the place where you find true alignment between what set your soul on fire and what brings in money. With this clarity comes to purpose, and the rest feels easy.
Once we discover their niche, we help them build a scalable business model and establish systems to support it. We don’t dwell on the “woo” and send them off to research the rest. When they finish with us, they have a bona fide business plan and growth strategy that they can follow as their business evolves.
We have taken a lot of courses and invested in coaches during our journey where, in the end, we were essentially left with nothing but a “feeling.” We don’t want to do that to our clients, so we make sure that every client has something tangible that they can use. We are not another “feelings farm.” We are all about taking intentional action for results.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Women inherently approach entrepreneurship differently, and becoming an entrepreneur has made me even more proud and happy that I am a woman.
We find that most women in entrepreneurship place a lot of value on developing relationships and building community. Not just a “network,” but a true community of people who are all looking to help each other out. There is a lot of support, so even though you can feel lonely at times, you are never truly alone. And there are a lot of opportunities that arise from placing value on community.
