Meet Trailblazer Kelli Warren

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelli Warren.

Kelli, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
About ten years ago, I got really sick and found out I had a chronic health condition. When all the prescribed medications didn’t work or made me feel worse, I started researching alternative options and learned how a low-carb diet could help manage some of my symptoms. I started eating a low-carb and low-sugar diet and slowly, but surely, it completely transformed my life. I always had a crazy sweet tooth, so sticking to this new lifestyle was really hard. I have always been creative and one of my outlets became making new recipes that fit into my low-carb and low-sugar lifestyle. Eventually, I realized that I could have a bigger impact on the world by sharing my recipes with others, and I created Notty Foods to provide indulgent low-sugar snacks that allow people to take control of their health while still enjoying their favorite treats.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While it didn’t always feel like a smooth road, looking back all the dots connect. At the time, being sick felt like the end of the world and I felt that I lost a lot of time. But without that, I wouldn’t be doing what I am today. My favorite mantra has always been “action = answers.” It is impossible to have it all figured out, but if you do something, anything really, you will get more answers which lead to more actions and more answers. Follow your gut and see where it takes you. You can always start in a new direction if you’d like.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Notty Foods – what should we know?
Through Notty, I am on a mission to help people reduce their sugar consumption and take control of their health. We transform traditional indulgent products by giving them a better-for-you twist. Our first product is a new take on chocolate. We add protein to our barks but don’t add any sugar, making them perfect low-carb treats. Our protein barks come in dark and white varieties and really fun flavors like Fluffernutter and Lemonberry. I’m most proud of the work we are doing when I get emails from people telling me how we’ve allowed them to enjoy foods they couldn’t eat previously. I got an email a few weeks ago from someone who was diabetic and had lost a lot of weight on a keto diet, saying that our product saves them from eating sugar and allows them to enjoy chocolate again. Our products are really much more than just another food product on the shelf, we are really solving a problem for people and improving their lives, and that makes all of the headaches that come with running your own business worth it.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I was always a very creative child making crazy things and crazy messes. My mom would often get frustrated by the endless messes from my creations, but my dad would always say “let her create,” which is still something my mom uses to blame him whenever I make a mess today. A lot of that creativity was focused on food. I think my mom and I would make some sort of sweet treat every single day. It was just something we did for fun. But without that permission and encouragement to make messes and create, I definitely wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today.
