Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Horner.
Kelsey, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started photography a little over four years ago while working a corporate job in the stock market. I started with small families and free sessions for my friends and after a few years of blood sweat and tears, one day my business just kind of exploded. While I was still working full time, I booked 14 weddings in 1 month and decided that this was the sign I was waiting for to quit my day job! I put in my notice, packed up my stuff, and have been an independent business owner for a full year this month. It was the best decision of my life!
Has it been a smooth road?
Getting started wasn’t easy because the industry is so saturated. I would look at other people’s work and question why my photos couldn’t look like that or why people weren’t seeking me out when I had so much to offer. I worked two full-time jobs for almost two years until people finally started noticing me. I would work 8-5 in the stock market, get off work and head straight to a photo session then edit all night. Long work weekends, sleepless nights and a supportive husband that would put food on my desk at night is what got me through it! My biggest piece of advice is to throw the comparison game out the window. The reason your photos don’t look like X photographer is because you see color differently than they do. You work with clients that are different than theirs and build relationships that they will never build. No matter the industry, you are individually important and the quicker you decide to love yourself, the faster others will follow suit.
We’d love to hear more about Kelsey Horner Photo, LLC.
I am primarily a wedding photographer that travels all over for my couples. I would say I’m specifically set apart for the emotion I capture — at least that is what random people on airplanes tell me after watching me edit for 3 hours, lol! I create a very close relationship with the majority of my brides and really seek to know the couple personally so that they are comfortable with me. I aim to work with couples who speak to me on a personal level. The ones that I make me cry when they inquire with me either because their story is so inspiring or because they pour out their heart telling me why my work inspires them. I don’t only want to capture a part of their story, I work with people who understand that they are also a huge party of my story and they’ve helped me become the person that I am today. I have been abundantly blessed to work with brides & grooms that love me and each other so well. It’s the best job on the planet.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I was always a very hard worker. Always had multiple jobs and worked for my own money… My mom often reminds me that I used to say that I would never own a business because I didn’t want the stress behind it. I said I would always work for “the man” and that I was okay with that. Looks like that didn’t work out, lol! I think watching my dad and sister run successful companies definitely helped plant the seed in my mind but it was really just God’s timing that put me in the photography industry right when I needed to be.
