Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Potter.
Kimberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For years I funneled my love for interiors into creating my own home and helping friends with theirs. Then, while living briefly in Mississippi, it became a small business. At the encouragement of a few fellow military spouse friends, I started offering services to others living in military housing and to my surprise, it took off! The experience I had in the South sparked something in me that I didn’t want to let go of when I moved to Colorado. Again, at the encouragement of good friends and support of my husband, I decided to launch my business, this time on a formal level. Since the start of The Wherever Home Interiors, almost a year ago, I’ve seen huge growth and success! That’s not to say there haven’t been challenges along the way but doing what I love and making my clients happy keeps me inspired.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road! The logistics alone were tough to navigate when I was getting started. And I’m still learning new things every day! It can be intimidating, but my advice is to really put yourself out there when you’re getting started. The best thing I did was get plugged in with an encouraging group of fellow female designers.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Wherever Home Interiors – what should we know?
One of my goals at The Wherever Home Interiors is to make design as accessible as possible and I think that makes my business unique! I want my clients to fall in love with their homes and turn their challenges such as space constraints, budget, incorporating inherited furniture pieces, etc. into opportunities.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t let the pressures of society get in your head! You don’t have to be Instagram perfect at all times, formally educated and know how to run a business overnight. I’ve only just figured out “what I want to be when I grow up!”
