Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsty York.
Kirsty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Blackbird Ink is a woman-owned and operated Tattoo shop in Lafayette, CO. Woman in the tattoo industry are not always treated the best. After years of working under not the nicest of male shop owners, our owner Kirsty York, decided to open her own shop. She wanted to create a more welcoming environment than your average street shop.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Like I said before, woman in the tattoo industry are not treated well, especially when just starting an apprenticeship. A lot of young apprentices are used for free labor and in some cases horribly harassed. There is a lot about the tattoo industry that needs to change. I am trying to start that change with my shop, Blackbird Ink.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Blackbird Ink Tattoo Shop – what should we know?
All of the artists at Blackbird have a little bit of a different style. But most importantly, we all do our best to create the best art possible. Our artists have strong art backgrounds and do more than your average flash off the wall tattoos. Some of our favorite things to tattoo are botanical work, animals, and stylized portraits.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
There are lots of strong female tattooers out there! Amiee Cronwell, Sandi Calistro, Gina ilczyszyn, Rebecca Blair, just to name a few!
