Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Kavan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started blogging when I was a senior in college. I was a journalism major and we had to create a blog. It was the first time I ever wrote things on a public forum. At the time my blog was called, “Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.” I was a naive little college senior trying to find her way. I wrote through heartbreak, graduation, moving home, and all the life experiences that come with trying to figure out life. After my now husband and I got engaged, I rebranded my blog to what it is now, “The Everyday Grace.” My focus is the everyday; life, love, family, motherhood, fashion, and all the other little things in between. It’s been my greatest outlet, and my public diary.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is it ever? Haha! When I started blogging it was really for me (and a class). I didn’t even think anyone read it. I quickly learned people were reading it when a post I wrote while in law school, went a little viral between my classmates. It was written in a moment of frustration and I actually ended up writing a retraction 🙂
While I was a little embarrassed that what I thought was a private blog going public, I was actually encouraged because people loved my writing. They enjoyed hearing my voice and my words. It was then that I really thought I could do this.
Also, when I first started there was no Instagram. Instagram has absolutely changed the game with blogging. Now, everyone is a blogger and sometimes the blogging game feels a bit oversaturated.
My advice for anyone wanting to start an Instagram or a blog, is just start. Write about what you love. Write about who you love, write about food, clothes, your baby. There is enough space for all of us. And actually when you celebrate other women out there, your own journey gets even better,
We’d love to hear more about The Everyday Grace.
I think my most proud “brand” moment was when I had someone tell me they related to me. She told me that she felt less alone in her motherhood journey. That’s when I thought I was on to something. I hope my “brand” encourages women (& men too!), fuels honestly, allows for a place of conversation, no judgment, all with some cute clothes and babies thrown in there.
I think what sets me apart is me. No one else can be me.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Ask! I found my mentor because I emailed her and she emailed me back. She’s been an inspiration to me for over 8 years now. If you never ask, you’ll never know. If you find someone inspiring, let them know.
