Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Christian.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kristin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I dreamed up Colorado Lifestyle Photography the year my daughter was born in 2012, with the intention of documenting our family and our love for Colorado. My husband and I are originally from Michigan, and we moved here 13 years ago to create a new lifestyle. Every day I wake up and see the mountains, and I marvel at their beauty. After my son was born in 2015, my love of photography spread to friends and grew into the business I have today. I officially launched my website in the fall of 2016, and I have been sharing my love of the Colorado lifestyle and collecting moments ever since.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest challenge for me personally has been overcoming my own fears. Fear of failure, fear of not being “good enough,” fear of making a mistake. When you own your own business, and you are the only employee, it can feel very personal when you don’t book a session. When the client doesn’t “choose” you. And as an artist, it can be all too easy to get caught up in comparing my work to others online. This year for me has been just as much about personal growth as it has been about growing my business. I’ve stopped chasing perfection, and I have started chasing the chaos because great pictures aren’t always technically correct. They aren’t perfect; they are real. The very best pictures capture the emotion and tell a story. They create a connection with the viewers and draw them in.
To other young women who are just starting their journey, I want to tell you that you are enough, and you are worth it. Sit down and make a list of your values. Create a mission statement for yourself and for your business. I believe you have to know who you are and understand your “why” before you can best serve others.
We’d love to hear more about Colorado Lifestyle Photography.
As a lifestyle photographer, I am committed to capturing authentic moments and delivering inspiring images that tell a story. I believe that family sessions are more than just a photoshoot. Through the use of vibrant colors and emotive imagery, I focus on the moment first, giving families uninterrupted time to simply enjoy being together. Sessions are about having quality time to unplug, play, connect, and be present to each other. I work to capture what family FEELS like and give my clients a meaningful experience. Let go of perfection and embrace the beauty in the chaos.
I am passionate about photography and living a life filled with intention and appreciation. Every day isn’t perfect and every day isn’t extraordinary. But when you look back on a collection of moments, that is when you can see the true beauty and magic in the life you have created.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In the photography industry, sometimes female photographers are not taken as seriously. We are considered just a “mom with camera,” and not a professional photographer. As female entrepreneurs and creatives, it can also be a challenge to place a value on ourselves and our work. It is easy to succumb to emotional pricing instead of running our photography company like a business. I, personally, have found a lot of business support and photography inspiration in women lead communities like Clickin Moms.
