Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren De Lay-Curcio.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I love a good story. Books, movies, songs, conversations – the mode doesn’t matter as long as a story exists. This affinity isn’t new. Stories have been in my bones since I was born. As a child, I would tell stories to anyone who listened. Some stories of my own, some I borrowed and retold, and as I grew up, I pursued stories in college – becoming an English major and, subsequently, a business school dropout.
I spent countless hours pouring over books and indulging in films. I wrote poetry and prose. Letters and essays. Stories filled my life. And I loved it.
I loved storytelling – good storytelling – so much that I made it my job to share that passion with others. I became an English teacher. Spending most days talking about literature and essays, nonfiction magic and lyrical genius, I was pretty satisfied. For a bit.
But at some point on that road, I realized I was playing a part in so many other stories, but to take a page from a modern marvel of storytelling – The Hills – the rest of my story was still unwritten. So I decided to change that.
I reached out to a very cool and connected friend in the hopes of finding a connection that would help me continue writing my own story in a new setting. And, long story short, as they say. I left teaching to pursue a job as a full-time marketer for an education-technology startup.
Now my days are filled with creativity, learning, and, of course storytelling. I get to tell the story of our brand. The story of our employees and our customers. Marketing has been the perfect focus for a new mode of storytelling. And this next chapter in my life has only just begun.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Change is always tricky, but with the right network of support and the right outlook, change can be an incredible thing. Imposter syndrome definitely existed (and still does) in many instances, but finding a company with empowering leadership and having my own network of badass boss babes to help me through it all, I’ve surged through moments of doubt to really ground myself in my many changes.
For anyone starting out, I would caution you to be too rooted. Although it’s scary or hard, taking a step and changing your course can be empowering and necessary. Build a strong network from the beginning. Interact with people smarter than you and seek their wisdom when you hit a roadblock.
I’ve spent so many hours on the phone with mentors and friends hearing their stories to see how I can use their experience as a guide for my own.
More than anything, trust yourself. Trust that you are good enough, smart enough, and capable enough to make some seriously rad moves in your life. Because you are.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about DotCom Therapy – what should we know?
Right now, I am the Chief Marketing Officer for DotCom Therapy, an online therapy company whose mission is to make therapy available to everyone everywhere.
I have never been prouder of what I do.
Teaching is so admirable, but for me, the change we are able to make on both sides of the industry (student AND educator) is so inspiring. DotCom Therapy (DCT) makes therapy more accessible for students (and adults), but our founder’s vision from day one has been to make it a company that therapists (and all employees) love working for.
And she has succeeded.
We all strive to operate from a space of compassion and acceptance to promote healthy and balanced work/life. We value honesty and support and collaboration and gratitude. The culture of DCT is incredible, but we also strive to disrupt the therapy and education industries and encourage our competition to be better and do better.
