Today we’d like to introduce you to Liza Degtiarova.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Liza. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since my early childhood, I loved fashion and the creativity it brings. I have started doing photo shoots at a young age and I walked my first runway in my early teenage years. I moved to Denver from Russia five years ago and I was focused on school, learning the language, and exploring new cultures. I was still doing photo shoots every once in a while, but the passion in me has guided me to apply to modeling agencies. I searched Colorado-based agencies and came across nxt|MODEL. I applied online, and I got an open call, after which I officially got signed. Ever since my passion grew into a job that I absolutely love and enjoy.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Modeling career requires a lot of perseverance. I would not be where I am if I did not put the effort into it. You have to be professional on sets, have a positive attitude, and know the expectations. It all comes with practice and getting comfortable with yourself, before anything. Your beauty, looks, attitude come from within yourself so it is very important to love and take care of yourself. There are a lot of opportunities in the modeling world, many castings that you have have to apply for or attend, yet it is never guaranteed that you get the job. If you never give up and keep trying, maintaining a positive attitude and believing in yourself, you will achieve it. Success comes to those, who work for it.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a published as well as a runway model. I shoot for boutiques and clothing brands, magazines, and I have walked for numerous designers. If I had to pick my favorite three looks from the runways, it would be Norberto Mojardin from the Latin Fashion Week, Sherry’s Angels from the Festival of Color, and Alicia Perrillo from Pret a Porter Fashion Show. Their looks were breathtaking and it was truly an honor to work with them. I have shot for Shuba magazine which I am proud of, as well as my recent photoshoot for a 2020 calendar which will come out soon! I am grateful for all the opportunities that come my way and working with amazing people. I take pride in every project that I am a part of because I am truly passionate about every single one of them.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I believe people see what they focus on the most. A lot of young women get discouraged by media these days, however, just like any other industry, modeling has its pros and cons. Opportunities are countless if you look for them. A lot of women see a modeling career as a competition between them and the others. Instead, I believe that women should support each other and learn how to truly be happy for someone else’s achievements. If we help each other out and support one another, we can really benefit and create a win-win situation. One of the best parts about modeling for me is to meet models who are as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. Inspiration is a powerful stream of energy that can only motivate others.
