Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariana Ramirez-Jimenez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been drawing as far as I can remember. I became serious as an artist going into middle school. I have always been inspired by animated movies such as the Iron Giant, Atlantis the Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet. It’s my dream and goal to create a movie, show, or comic such as these amazing films. Originally, I wanted to become an animator and later realized it wasn’t for me. I’m a lot more interested in concept art and visual development. As an artist who didn’t have a lot of opportunities to take art classes throughout high school, I taught myself everything that I know now. I’m currently attending CU Denver in their illustration program.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I’ve mentioned before, I didn’t have that many opportunities to take art classes throughout high school. However, I did have amazing teachers and friends that helped me grow to become a better artist and to get out of my comfort zone. I’m also lucky enough to have family that support my work and to keep perusing what I want to do. This isn’t only directly towards women, but everyone else too who wants to become an artist, keep going and keep those close who support you. As an artist, it’s hard to not compare yourself with other great artists who seem to be ahead of you. It’s important to know that it takes time to get better. There are moments where you’ll be in artblock, and its okay. Inspiration comes and goes.
Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I’m known for creating characters. Currently, I’m working on two comics, one where I post more of my daily life with friends and family, and another with three characters trying to get home from an unknown dimension. I’m flattered when people compliment my work saying they can see this on TV or in a comic book series. I’m proud of how far I’ve come. It’s nice to see how much I’ve improved over the years and I can’t wait for what brings me in the near future.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
As I’ve said before, the Iron Giant, Atlantis the Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet were huge inspirations for me when I was younger. I was always in awe with these amazing films and as I got older, I really appreciated the style and character design from these films. Growing up, I drew for fun and creating worlds with fairies and superheroes that came naturally to me.
