Meet Trailblazer Megan Atkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Atkins.

Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born and raised in the Denver Metro Area in a somewhat tumultuous household, I was determined to change the pattern for my family. I graduated from CU Boulder with my Bachelors in Economics and Business and went straight into the corporate world. I soon felt I was beating my head against a wall trying to fulfill my “why” while feeling like I was chained to a desk and knew something needed to change for a sustainable future.

A friend introduced me to a business/life coach, Bill Roth with Basics Team, who really helped in giving me the confidence to pursue a career that would fill me up and allow me to truly help people which landed me in the world of Real Estate. I already knew I loved the industry; from interior design to creating a financial legacy through Real Estate, and I just needed to find my place.

After countless meetings over coffee and hours of networking, I was introduced by a friend to a Commercial Broker, Kyle Malnati and Greg Johnson, who allowed me breath through a fire hose of knowledge regarding multifamily and investment property. I was laser-focused on getting started on a career that I felt right about and something was pulling me to branch out on my own. I wanted to use my own strengths to be the best steward I could be for the people I would be lucky enough to help with such a pivotal financial decision.

I made the transition into Residential Real Estate in early 2014. Soon after, I teamed up with my current business partner, Derek Thomas who embodies everything I believe in and we have worked together ever since. He is a gem of a man both personally and professionally and I am forever grateful that we met. Working with Derek has allowed us both to be able to balance our oh-so-important family life! We are now a proud team at Compass Real Estate – Team Colorado Homes – and work alongside another Realtor, Jason Cummings and our Marketing Manager, Samantha Ennis. We are so blessed to be among the Top 1% of Realtors in CO.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No road worth traveling is always smooth. All along the way, I was faced with doubts and insecurity of whether I was making the right decision in leaving a steadier corporate world for an entrepreneurial lifestyle. I doubted if I was good enough or worthy of success. The first few years were a struggle – holding side jobs to pay the bills – but in the great words of Rachel Morrison, “Success doesn’t come overnight, especially for women.”

Recently, I dealt with another season of doubt in having my first child, Sawyer, who is now six months old. How could I possibly be a great mom and run a business? I’ve never been more motivated to succeed for my son but have adjusted my goals to be present for my family as well.

I’m not sure I’m qualified for giving advice but I would encourage anyone reading this to find out what drives you. I had to really sit down and define what that was for me and probably wouldn’t have done it without the push from an outside source, which for me was my business coach. Find that underlying “why” and then figure out how to make a living doing it. Be consistent. Get up after a bad day, a day full of rejection, and try again. Your own personal success journey is inevitable if you just keep at it.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
I think it’s so important to study and focus on influential women in order to learn from their behavior and mentality. Mayo Angelou comes to mind for her wise words that have always stuck with me. She said “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

The self-made Mary Kay Ash said: “Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says, ‘Make me feel important.’ Not only will you succeed in sales, you will succeed in life.”

If we focus on doing right by others, everything else will fall into place.
