Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Brown.
Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The Card Aisle started when I was in college. I was taking a business course where we had to write a 30-page business plan (YUCK). We got to choose any business we wanted. I had always LOVED picking out greeting cards for people so starting my own greeting card business felt perfect. We were required to have samples of our “product.” I made two greeting cards that ended up making the class roar with laughter during my presentation. Of course, at that moment, I was freakin hooked. I started selling my cards at my college gift shop, then on Etsy, now in a few local boutiques and nearby markets.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Smooth road?! I’d like to meet the person(s) who are able to answer ‘yes’ to this question! Not at ALL. Every day is a struggle when you own your own business. Especially when that business requires you to put yourself out there creatively. I’ve battled with thinking my work isn’t good enough, or my illustrations are awful. You get past constantly doubting yourself though. I just kept creating and keep putting my work in front of people. It was scary, but once I saw such a positive response from complete strangers, I realized I am actually talented and worthy of success. I’m not saying you need other people to tell you your worth. Ew, no way. But, feedback is important when you’re testing things out. My advice for women is to keep putting your work in front of people. Whatever that means for you. It’s scary and you’ll be shy, but KEEP DOING IT. You will feel like your talents don’t match up to others, but THEY DO. That’s all in your head. We all feel that way. Even the polished people on Instagram. Just keep going.
We’d love to learn more about your work. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a brand, organization or service provider? What sets you apart from others?
I also design custom wedding invitations. I’d say that’s my ‘bread and butter’. I own another small business called Pixie Chicago, where I get to strengthen with a whole different set of skills I have. My custom work, whether it be cards or wedding invitations, are definitely what I’m known for and what sets me apart. I love being able to help people bring their visions to life. You wouldn’t believe how many custom greeting cards I’ve made for people that don’t think they’re artistic or funny at all. I love being able to do that for people. I love that I get a peek inside someone’s weird brain. 🙂
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
So, I’m horrible at using things like podcasts and books to strengthen my business. I use those things for pleasure only (Conan Needs a Friend podcast!). It’s something I’m working on now and trying to be better about. However, the Being Boss podcast was super helpful when I was trying to figure out my freelance pricing.
