Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Cardamone.
Michele, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved the art of photography but only opened up my small boutique studio seven years ago and rediscovered my passion for portrait photography. I worked hard to build my business and would photograph anything that would give me the experience to gain more understanding in my industry. I also make an effort to continue taking classes whenever I can. Luckily, there are so many resources on the internet. It was important to me to define my own unique style and to be recognized as an artist creating fine-art images that are beautiful, soulful and authentic. I made sure to balance family, my passion for the outdoors while always committing myself whole heartedly to my business and its success.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been fairly smooth but juggling the different things that are important to me while also growing my business has been challenging. My struggles were when things got out of balance and I felt that I was either compromising the attention I was giving to my children and husband or that I was not playing in the outdoors as much as I would have liked. A healthy mind and body are also important and I worked hard to balance family, exercise and photography. However, I believe that you have to make some sacrifices when starting a new business. It can be all-encompassing and takes a lot of hard work. Then, when you really start to establish your reputation and credibility you can work harder at balancing your work with other things that are important to you. I always made sure to stay current and be well informed.
Owning and managing a photography studio is also expensive and I had to make sure that I had all the proper camera and lighting equipment but that I didn’t purchase more than what I really needed. I started slowly and built up my gear over time.
Please tell us about Michele Cardamone Photography – what should we know?
I am a professional photographer who specializes in artistic portraiture that captures the inner beauty and essence of those I photograph. My individual and family portraits are the work that I feel best defines my style where the synergy of light and composition are carefully planned so that I am ready for the unscripted moment when things naturally unfold. The dynamic changes with every family and each portrait reveal something very different about their personal narrative. My images reflect the deeper meaning of relationships while also celebrating the connection amongst mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers.
My goal is to capture hauntingly beautiful photographs that are visually interesting, always creative and compelling to all that view them. I am constantly striving to balance my passion for the outdoors, my family life with my professional and artistic drive.
It was scary when I first made the decision to open my own studio. I questioned whether I could handle a business on my own as I had never done so in the past. But I also knew that I would work as hard as I possibly could. I had to believe in myself and not let my fears get in the way of my success.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I would ask people that you trust in your community who they would recommend to help guide you toward your goals. Just keep asking questions. Be curious. Reach out to those who have experience in your field of interest. Most professionals are happy to help those who are exploring their passion and need some guidance. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there as most people will respect your effort. Be bold.
