Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Delmez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Mon Ami Mindy was started as a journey of rediscovering my identity. I was struggling with some issues in my personal life, and really just wanted to journey into something I felt was my own. Photography is something I have always enjoyed. I received my first camera when I was in fifth grade. My mom gave me a Kodak Instamatic, which had been her first camera. Coming back to photography has really helped me grow by introducing me to new people and bringing me into my creative voice.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
MY biggest obstacle came in the beginning. I had to learn that I didn’t need other people to hold my hand while I learned. I think a lot of women have struggled with independence. There have been times where I have felt stuck in learning my gear and lighting, but all of it has been worth it! I look forward to learning even more.
I think women should fit right in when it comes to photography. There is no reason to hold yourself back. Even if you are starting with a small budget, get out there and work with what you have. Starting with limitations can actually give you an edge. You learn how to be resourceful.
We’d love to hear more about Mon Ami Mindy Photography.
I have dabbled in a lot of genres of photography, like landscapes, families, and shows. My real joy comes from working in fashion. I really feel fashion is the underdog of the art world. A lot of creativity and work goes into designing clothing. Lines, colors, and textures are everything. Denver has such a diverse community. I feel we have a lot of brave and bold individuals working on their dreams, and I am inspired by them.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
Women will always have an advantage in boudoir. There is a big market for it. And a lot of women just feel more comfortable working with a female photographer.
