Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikita Palmer.
Nikita, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My mother bought me my first eyeshadow palette when I was three years old. I’ve been obsessed with makeup ever since! Growing up, I would study each and every woman’s makeup in my father’s collection of reggae music videos and imagine those looks on myself. It wasn’t long until I started applying those makeup looks on my self. In 2013, I was given the opportunity to attend an esthetician class with a full-ride scholarship, so I could become certified and start my career in the beauty industry. I graduated and later was blessed with a job at SEPHORA. I actually didn’t pass their makeup application test (go figure, lol). My friend Kassie talked the managers into allowing me to apply makeup instead of working at the cash register! From that point on, I had a point to prove. I spent hours before work trying to perfecting my makeup, watching YouTube videos and practicing on anyone who’d let me touch their face. After a while, my skills were quite advanced and I believed that I could make more money running my own makeup artistry business instead of working at SEPHORA. Therefore, I started Posh Kita Beauty LLC in 2016. I’ve been doing makeup ever since! My work has been published in multiple magazines, I’ve participated in the RAW Artist Show in 2017, and have serviced many other special events around Colorado!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a bumpy road for me. In 2018, I became homeless and that made me lose quite a bit of clientele. My best advice would be to have a solid plan before starting your business and make sure to have at least $5000 saved before quitting your day job! Another bit of advice would be to not compare yourself to others in your career field and never feel threatened by other people’s success, lastly, there is room for everyone to succeed even if there is 1 billion people who are already successful at what you trying to accomplish.
We’d love to hear more about Posh Kita Beauty.
I’m all about being glamorous so my makeup artistry is definitely very exaggerated, fun and trendy. I am a self-proclaimed “Crease Queen”! All of my looks are completed with a defined brow and voluminous lash. I love creating looks on my clients that will make them the center of attention no matter the occasion or event. I’m proud that I am able to apply makeup to any and all skin complexions! What sets me apart from other makeup artists in Denver is the way my clients feel during their session with me, they come for a makeup artist and they leave with a friend.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t try to be like the next person! Those things that you find weird or unattractive about yourself are actually the things that set you apart from the masses. Those are the things that people will be able to relate to and will be attracted to. When people see you, love your self and accept yourself, they will begin to follow suit. Then, it will be easy to build and maintain clientele. Just be unapologetically YOU!!
