Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryane Urie.
Ryane, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Like most green tattoo artists, I found myself working in a walk-in studio in Denver where you never know who’s coming through the door with whatever expectations, I did my best to keep my integrity as an artist and as a female in a saturated industry of men. It was clear after a year that my clients were loyal and lovely but the environment didn’t match, constant jokes about sexuality and using dating apps to gain clients wasn’t even close to what art should be about, being surrounded by the “rockstar artist” behavior was what actually caused a great shift in my own, I took it upon myself to start a culture opposite of the people I have tolerated for years. Two years later, I have been the proud owner of The Wolf Den Custom Tattoo studio that won this years best studio in the city along with multiple publications showcasing that we are a safe please for all walks of life, built on the foundations of integrity, talent, and hard work and very happy to continue growing with our new studio and location in Rino Denver.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth road, which can make it very emotionally charged, carving out a positive nook in whatever Industry is incredibly trying, feeling like you have to prove yourself over and over again and not show any weaknesses is a constant internal battle, but as I grow into myself and my brand, I am realizing that extending a branch to other owners and being kind and supporting other women makes it more of a community than an unnecessary competitor. As one amazing owner once told me, “make a splash, and always offer a towel after, if they don’t take it, it’s on them.” Be kind, it goes further than you know, never speak Ill of competition, and be grateful for what you have.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Wolf Den Custom Tattoo Studio – what should we know?
I am a tattoo artist in Denver Colorado, and I think I am known for watercolor and abstract designs, I love hand drawing on humans like a painting and turning it into body art with a pulse. I am the proudest of a tattoo company publishing my book of drawings which are all insanely different from our industry norm of sailor Jerry style art. What sets me apart from most artists besides the fact that I am a queer female business owner is that I constantly travel the world to continue my own education to be a better owner and artist.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
One of the biggest influences in my life is my mother, she was a single mother for years, managing Time, energy, work, and two kids. If anyone knows how to run anything with success and grace it would be her, I try to apply her train of thoughtfulness and application daily to enrich my employees and my own art, as well as bedside manner to my clients.
