Meet Trailblazer Sarah Elliott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Elliott.

Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been a reader since the second grade. On a fateful day, the school librarian pulled me aside to tell me that I could choose to check out books from the advanced reading section. I felt so special and important. Being able to borrow books to take home felt like a very big responsibility, and I treasured my time in the library. As I continued through my education though, I found there were less people who appreciated the magic of books. While I had a small group of friends that I read and discussed books with, I still found myself somewhat isolated from others. In March of 2017, I shared my first book post on my Instagram page. That is when I discovered the online community of book enthusiast within ‘Bookstagram’. Since then, I have made some truly amazing connections and built lasting friendships. So many people have experienced similar feelings of separation in their own way. But within this community, we are able to bridge the miles of distance and find like-minded individuals who encourage and appreciate the ideals of the reader. Today, I work closely with fellow readers, authors, publishers, and shops to spread the latest in book news. As well as continue to share the enthusiasm for beloved fandoms. My hope is to cultivate authentic connections with readers from all genres and inspire a love of reading to those who have yet to discover the magic of books.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been very fortunate to have found such an encouraging group of individuals within my field. But there are always struggles when you start a new journey. It is so important to choose an area that you have a strong passion for. That way, those struggles can be met with your enthusiasm and ambition. I strongly recommend establishing a close-knit group of individuals whom you can work with along the way. People you can trust to give honest feedback and who can help to encourage you throughout your journey. When you work alongside others who share similar goals and intentions as you, it makes the experience and the successes so much better.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As a ‘Bookstagrammer,’ my main focus is to highlight books that I have read and enjoyed. The best part about reading is to be able to discuss and share the books you have appreciated with others. I strive to bring positive energy to all of my posts. So that when others see them, they are inspired and filled with joy. While the majority of my photos focus on books, I also work with small businesses to promote items that they have created. Many of these items, such as bookmarks, mugs, and candles, can be used to enhance your reading experience. I also work to promote these small shops to people who would otherwise not know about them. The best part about this work is to see someone reading a book or using an item that I have recommended. Knowing that they love and appreciate it as much as I do.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I am the oldest daughter in my family. I have two sisters who are much younger than I am. So as a teenager I spent a big portion of my time caring for them. I learned so much about myself during that time. My sisters have been such a big part of my identity. They have taught me about responsibility, and life. Without the close relationship that I have with my family, I don’t think that I would be the person that I am today. They give me unending support and constantly fill my life with joy and love.
