Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Rose.
Savannah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I turned 18 years old – I decided to move to Hawaii. I had an opportunity to swim for the college, and living by the beach was always a dream of mine. Throughout my time on the island – I truly discovered who I am and what I believe to be my current life purpose – I know I know it’s cheesy. But those islands can teach you so much about the world and who you are! I had a plan to graduate early in three years but knew my time on the island wasn’t over. My last class was in June, but I didn’t walk until December. In those six months, I went out on a whim and decided not yet to find a big kid job, but start a blog.
Now, this blog was a far-out dream, I had no idea what it would be about, and I didn’t even know to make an income was involved – so this was a pure hobby. In the meantime for work, I loved being a nanny, and family photographer on the island. I had a hard drive over 50GB of pictures from the islands – so I decided why not use the blog to share all my Hawaii images!
During my second year, a former airline ran a student special for all UH kids, $45 a flight between all the islands! It was a game changer and we got to explore Maui, Kauai, Big Island, and of course our home Oahu. I bought used $20 tent off a Facebook Buy, Sell Trade page and off we went exploring.
Getting ready for these trips started becoming a hobby for me – I had researched so much on the island (best hikes, beaches, etc.) but truly found some information hard to find or even non-existent. Once I started the blog, and we were taking more island trips I decided why not share about these adventures so YOU can do them too 🙂
The travel bug continued to grow, and by 2017, I and my now fiance wanted to experience more. Asia Air ran a deal for $100 tickets to Japan – so we sold our stuff packed our bags and became traveling nomads for a year! We traveled through Asia, the US, and then lived in Europe for eight months. We now live in Denver and adopted a puppy! I continue to Nanny and blog in hopes of inspiring and helping others to Find their Adventure!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I truly believe we can all travel and check off amazing experiences off our bucket list. We do everything very frugally and put our dreams first, and that’s what I hope to show other young woman travelers. We truly only get one life, so why should we waste saying I wish? Say I did! If you want to have a picnic in Paris or start your own fashion blog, then just do it. In today’s world, we are so blessed to have access to information at our fingertips. With some dedication and hard work, you can do whatever you set your mind to!
My best advice is to have a plan. If you want to travel, you need a plan of actually planning the trip (buying tickets, accommodation, adventures, etc.) but you also need a financial plan on how to pay for it. I believe that hard work pays off, if you work part-time as a Barista on the weekends, you’ll have enough spare cash to take that Vegas Road Trip or see the Tulips in the Netherlands!
My favorite quote right now is ‘If nothing changes, nothing changes.’ Options are endless when it comes to saving money and putting together a budget. We all have the same access to destinations across the globe as any other Insta Influencer! Figure out a way to save money and make those dreams come true! 🙂
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
During the day, I am still a nanny and photographer, but also recently started branching out into Web and Graphic Design! I still use my blog and in fact, it has now evolved into an adventure brand (www.saltwatervibes.com)! While I wish it was my full-time job, I still consider it a hobby!
One of the things I am most proud of is, I have now written and self-published two E-books, one on Oahu and one Traveling Young and Broke. I also have a couple more on the way! I want to have a website full of free and paid travel guides that will help everyone see the world.
I think my travel blog is unique because I treat every reader like a friend. You would trust your best friend about a hike recommendation, restaurant, or even a book! I want to be that friend. Someone like you, that have done this adventure and can give advice so YOU have the best experience possible. I have always been known as a bubbly girl, so I decided to use that energy in spreading the good vibe. I want to make everyone’s travel dreams achievable!
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
My best advice is, never stop adventuring. Our backyards, home state, or across the sea – the world can teach you so much. Never lose sight of that adventure bug and continue to work hard every day so you can always achieve your dreams! Hard work is always rewarded.
With Instagram and travel blogs these days it may feel discouraging to find yourself working every day. However, remember that this is YOUR life. I promise you do not have to be a full-time traveler to go on an adventure and have an epic time. There is so much to see and do on this beautiful planet, with the right positive mindset and a plan, you can achieve it all 🙂
