Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Kendrick.
Vanessa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my career in business banking during the recession. It was a great learning experience, but after moving to Colorado, I knew I did not want to go back into banking. There were aspects of my previous career that I enjoyed; I loved building relationships with my clients, helping them through a transaction they otherwise couldn’t do on their own and getting involved in community. A career in real estate allows me to do all of those things in an industry I am more passionate about. In 2013, I received my real estate license and became a full-time real estate agent. I have loved it ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Real estate can be a challenging career. You are always on call for your clients, so you could potentially work 24/7 and through holidays and vacations. It’s imperative to set proper boundaries for yourself and your clients. For example, I don’t take calls or answer texts through dinner, and I always take at least one day of the weekend off to spend with family. The most challenging aspect of this career is prospecting for clients. Prospecting is your number one job in real estate, secondary to showing houses and writing contracts. The first challenge is finding a method for prospecting that you enjoy and you are good at. The second is making sure you are consistent in your efforts every day. Finally, real estate can be a cyclical business meaning some months you have a lot of business and others you have none. This can take a toll on your mental state. Pushing through the ups and downs and becoming both mentally strong and financially savvy to properly manage the fluctuation in income is important.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I live in Arvada, CO, and I am very involved in my community. Having said that, I focus on helping first-time home buyers and young professionals in Arvada and surrounding areas. I went to school to become a teacher, so I have a passion for education. I love guiding first-time home buyers through the process with the goal that they will become clients for life.
I am also known for my active role in the community. I am a member of the Arvada Young Professionals, a member of the Arvada Chamber Board of Directors, a board member for the Two Ponds Preservation Foundation, a Next Generation committee member for Family Tree and recently appointed to the Arvada Economic Development Association Retention Committee. I believe that real estate agents have a vested interest in the success of their community. As the community thrives, so does our business and vice versa. So I take a lot of pride in my involvement and seek lots of opportunities to give back.
Finally, I consider myself a market expert. I have a degree in Math, and I love numbers. I think it is important for real estate agents to be familiar with the market trends. I work for a company that also values market knowledge. So I stay informed of current market trends and data in order to educate my clients. This gives them the tools and confidence to make smart real estate decisions and determine their strategy.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Exercise professionalism in every area of your life. A professional woman, no matter the age, will earn respect from her peers and those senior to her. Your reputation and respect will help you get to where you want to be.
