Meet Trailblazer Victoria Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Robinson.

Victoria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I wasn’t your typical girly girl “hairstylist in the making” growing up. I actually spent most nights in a boxing ring with my hair a mess under a headgear. My sweat soon turned to sparkle though, as I discovered the curling iron. I remember this awkward time vividly. That iron was the magic I needed and the confidence booster I found growing up. The ring became too dangerous and after several hand injuries, I realized I didn’t want to risk my career and other passion, hair.

I spent years working for a corporate salon but was being drawn to the flexibility and possibilities that cultivate from being an independent hairstylist. While I was so honored to receive the Customer Service Award two years in a row out of 20 salons, I was craving that “next level” or “what’s next”, that is when my family and I decided it was time.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? Any advice for other women, particularly young women who are just starting their journey?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. I quickly realized as a startup and independent stylist I needed a support system, that of which was industry related and non-industry related. I would overwork myself, I had no plan or order to the never-ending to-do list, and self-care became of obvious importance. So, I sought after a coach and a community of stylists that I could connect with. This has made a powerful difference for my organization, confidence, and accountability. I don’t know that I’m one to give advice on business, as it’s all a learning process to me, I do however believe that if you’re doing it for the right reasons it will work out.

We’d love to hear more about Hair & Color Studio.
I think what sets me apart is I’m a home-based salon studio. My space is small but it’s practical, and pretty darn cute I must say! I’m proud to offer a private experience for my guests, where they are the only focus for all of their hair needs. No juggling of clients, no side conversations, no blow-dryers and clippers running, just you and your stylist. I am all in on each guest. I specialize in color and customized haircuts that fit my client’s lifestyles. I am most proud of the level of detail I put into each client’s experience and investing in continued education as a thriving stylist behind the chair.

Any advice for other women, particularly young women who are just starting their journey in leadership?
Female leadership comes with so many barriers as a whole, there is one barrier that comes to mind, that I feel comfortable mentioning, and that’s having an impulse for perfectionism. Commonly, women can be so hard on themselves, overthinking or believing negative thoughts. No, no, no. That will stop you before you even get started. We need to be good to ourselves, and that starts with the thoughts we believe.
