Today we’d like to introduce you to Violetta Nyx.
Violetta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a 26 years old tattoo artist. I’ve been an artist my whole life and ended up tattooing to pursue the dream of being able to draw every day and get paid for it! I went through a three years apprenticeship before completely tattooing and have been doing tattoos full time for five years now. Originally from Texas, Colorado has been my home for about seven years now. Colorado is a great place for me, it’s beauty inspires me every day to create. I’ve worked in Boulder, Wheat Ridge and now I’m proud to be at Tribe Tattoo on Santa Fe in Denver! I strive to create unique custom art every day and thanks to my clientele, that is happening!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wouldn’t say it’s been completely hassle-free, a tattoo apprenticeship can be a lot of work for little pay. It’s also pretty challenging to learn, imagine trying to re learn writing from a pre-k level! I was lucky to have a great mentor who was patient with me and taught me the correct way to do things. Tattooing has been a lot more open to women lately, the shop I’m at now has three women apprentices! So if you are interested in learning, I would suggest doing your research on reputable shops, putting a portfolio together and talking to artists to get to know them beforehand. It can be hard to get into and the journey usually isn’t easy but it can be worth it in the end if you work hard!
We’d love to hear more about Violetta Nyx Art.
I exclusively tattoo for a living, I do a variety of styles including realism, illustrative, Fine lone, watercolor, stippling, black and grey, but the most requested is definitely colorwork. Lately, I’ve been working in mostly larger-scale pieces but enjoy doing smaller ones as well. Everything I do is original and drawn by me so there’s no other piece quite like it. I think what sets me apart is the fact that I do so many different styles and enjoy it, I like being able to challenge myself to try new things artistically and make any idea the best it can be!
Which women have inspired you in your life?
The first thing that really introduced me to tattooing was seeing LA Ink on tv, so I have to include Kat Von D as being my first influence into tattooing. Since then, one of my favorite tattoo artists is Teresa Sharpe, the winner of Oxygen’s Best Ink tv show. One of my biggest inspirations in art is the pinup artist Olivia De Berardinis for her amazing paintings portraying women throughout the years.
