Today we’d like to introduce you to Wanda Wood.
Wanda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I feel that I am a classic example of do what you truly desire to do. I am doing exactly that. I wanted to do real estate for a very long time. Initially, my motivation came from the positive experience that my parent’s had when they purchased their home in 1984. The realtor was so kind, patient and resourceful. I was only six years old at the time but I remember how she made all of us feel. When we moved into our new home, our realtor was still very much in contact. She was over often for dinner, she would pick us up and take us to the movies or the circus. We did some really fun things with her. She and her husband became grandparents to myself and my siblings. Speeding up some years, she eventually stopped doing real estate and unfortunately grew ill and passed away. I was always so enamored by the way she treated people and the impression that she left on them.
The first thought of entering the real estate world happened to me in or around 2004. I researched the classes and all of the fees that were associated with getting started. It was not looking likely that I would be able to afford to get started. I at the time was in the middle of a divorce and had a five-year-old daughter. I buried the idea in the back of my head and just left it there.
Speeding up a few more years… my circumstances all-around had changed. My daughter was in her last year of high school, I was newly married to a very supportive man and I felt that I had choices. Knowing that I had choices had me revisit that thought of real estate. I decided that it was time that I do something that I truly wanted to do. I had sacrificed so much for different reasons and those sacrifices always left me behind with the things that I wanted or desired to do. I made an exit plan from the Department of Corrections and proceeded with getting my real estate license.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel that real estate will provide you with what you provide it. I had a good idea about how I wanted my business to look overall, I just needed to fill in the blanks with processes. I have been extremely blessed with the support that I have, the people I get to work with and the people I meet every day.
The only thing that I would say that I struggled with was balance. I always want to give my 110% to everything and I believe that I can, I found myself not being able to keep up with the things the way I wanted. It was at that point I identified that I had to put myself on some kind of schedule to keep on top of things.
Most people don’t realize that when you are building a business that you will spend more time working than not. Building and branding takes some time. Consistency and a plan is key.
The advice I would say to younger women just starting their journey is to stay consistent. Stay positive and motivated, Feed your soul and your mind… ALWAYS!!! Unfortunately, not everyone is going to be your cheerleader and you may lose some people along the way. Success comes with sacrifices and some of those sacrifices are not always planned.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a realtor with Mackenzie Jackson. The brokerage is located on the North end of Colorado Springs. I service the Colorado Springs and surrounding areas to include parts of Denver, Pueblo, Florence, and Canon City. I specialize in residential sales and land.
I enjoy being a resource and helping. There is so much gratification in that for me. Typical clients for me have been first time home buyers, military relocation due to PCS, move-up and move-down clients. Purchasing a home for some is one of the biggest decisions that they will make in their life. While it can be a great, exciting experience. it can also be very nerve-wracking and worrisome. I feel it is my job to alleviate any extra stress that they might have.
I am most proud of offering an experience that my clients can remember as being a positive one. I pride myself on offering service beyond the sale. I would say this sets me apart.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well-positioned for?
I feel that any opportunity that a woman deems desirable is a perfect fit. We settle so much in so many different areas of our lives. I think that there are challenges with change as a whole, there is not enough media coverage about opportunities that are available.
I will say that more and more I experience a vast amount of woman in my circle who genuinely support others business. This element I feel is very important for our community of woman entrepreneurs. Support is hugely important and unfortunately, we don’t see it enough amongst each other.
