Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Bohling.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Twenty years into my tech career at a fortune 100 telecom company, I was retaliated against for eighteen months and fired after reporting sexual harassment. You might say I was an early “Me” in the “Me too” movement. I’d always been a relentless advocate for women in tech, mentoring and building organizations that allow both men and women to thrive. I was blessed to spend the next ten years running sales in tech companies, as well as running my own startup, before leaving five years ago to write a book for women in business and tech called “Cowgirl Up! A Woman’s Guide to Navigating the Corporate Frontier”, and starting Corporate Cowgirl Up, a gender intelligence consulting firm.
The metamorphosis from computer engineer to social scientist and the vast diversity in my professional life set me up for this bigger work of building gender intelligent leaders and driving increased profitability and innovation in business.
Corporate Cowgirl Up is a gender equality consulting firm partnering with organizations to deliver customized diversity and inclusion, leadership and gender equality solutions. As change management experts, we ignite the innovation required to realize the financial benefits of gender equality, elimination of the gender gap and unconscious bias and gender intelligence training.
As a speaker, thought leader, Big Girl Money podcast co-host and business consultant on leveraging the financial rewards of gender equality and inclusive leadership, I’ve hit the prime in my career and can’t wait to see the impact I’m able to make to create a more gender intelligent business culture.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the toughest challenges I’ve encountered is recently being diagnosed with breast cancer four months ago. Finding a research trial at UC Health has provided the opportunity to not only shrink the tumor before surgery but also create new standards of care for Invasive Lobular breast cancer patients.. I’ve received the gift of moving from control and fear to surrender and trust that God’s got this season of my amazing life just like he had every other challenging circumstance in my journey.
I’ve finally learned that just because I CAN get something done, or take a new role or push through a 15 hour day at the office doesn’t mean I SHOULD. I learned how to put my health first and “just say yes” to moments with family or friends.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Corporate Cowgirl Up – what should we know?
My brand is one of stirring up action, being a maverick for change, inspiring and encouraging others to make the changes that allow them to excel. It’s easy to follow the common thought that ‘better the devil you know than the new one you don’t, but I’m living proof with endless stories of how each big career shift (engineer to sales executive to author and keynote speaker) has brought amazing experiences I never would have had if I had allowed fear to rule.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
More men to sponsor great women for the big jobs.
Strong female role models on boards and in the executive suite.
Women being mentored on profit and loss (business acumen).
