Meet Venus Kaump of Nail’D it by Venus in Severance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Venus Kaump.

Venus, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was a young kid I was always interested in “nails “. I would beg my mom to buy the press-on kits, but we were a conservative family and she didn’t allow it. As I got older and more rebellious 😎 I would use my allowance and buy them but I didn’t like how short they lasted. So I began to modify how I applied them. I would etch my nails, glue the press on with super glue and then file and fill them with glue to fit my nails. I actually didn’t get my first set of acrylics until I was 18 and in cosmetology school at Cheeks in Greeley, COLORADO. I was in school for full cosmo until I realized Nails were my passion. I was fast, creative and GOOD.

I graduated when I was 19, pregnant with my first child; it was tough to find work in salons as nails were not that popular. I worked odd jobs (including nights at 7-11) while working days doing nails at home and raising my daughter by myself. About two years later I married an old high school friend and found myself looking again to build my nail clientele. It was tough building my client during this time as my prices and incapable of taking walk-ins killed my business with the new chains popping up in the early 2000’s. After divorcing my husband I found I needed stability and a good health insurance and ended up in a corporate job underwriting contract for a credit agency for almost 16 years. When I met my current husband after 4 years of dating we got married and he suggested I get back into nails. (I should mention we almost opened a bakery too but I didn’t want to commit to the hours That’s a whole other story of 3D cakes and 5tier wedding cakes 😎).

Shortly after we got married we found out my oldest was going to have our first grandchild. Super excited I left my job of 15+ years to babysit her. I got bored with just being Mimi and housewife so I started doing nails in the evenings. That was two years ago and now I do nails five to six days a week and a clientele of about 125 from our current home. This is the short story but I knew when I was in high school I wanted to open a salon so with our recent successes we are currently searching for a location to open a brick and mortar salon. I can’t wait for this to happen it’s going to b great. My oldest daughter will join me and open a boutique inside my salon. But for now, I work from a small studio in our home. Did I mention We have 5 kids; ages ranging from 23-13 plus our grandchild.

Every day I’m working hard to expand my talent but with recent demands in my industry and everyone excited to receive on one custom nail services from me, it’s had to keep up. I need to clone myself.

Has it been a smooth road?
Briefly went over this in the previous screen – oops. So yes. Chains pushed me out of business because of what I couldn’t offer and how quickly clients were in and out. Being a single mom for 15 years I needed stability and insurance but missed the creative aspects and being my own boss. It’s also been quite difficult finding a brick and mortar for a small business line me However, I have faith in me and my business and day by day the road leads me forward I’m proud of my family and the support they give me allowing me to grow my business into a success. AND. myself in giving my nails another shot after so many years.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a manicurist, I specialize in the health of the nails and skin. BUT my passion is customized nails and artistic designs with acrylics. .

I would say the one on one attention and customization I offer to each of my clients is why I’ve succeeded this time. I give them a scheduled appointment that’s suited to there needs. I educate my clients on the health of their nails. I make products to assist my clients in their homes. And we have fun. Whether they need to vent or just relax each of my clients feels like they are being pampered and cared for. I believe most of my clients wouldn’t just call me their nail artist but their friend.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes of course; well no because I’m trying to take over my small section 😂. Haha. But yes we are growing and we need good salons like mine to care.
