Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Adeniran.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Victor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, well, I was born here in Denver but moved back to Nigeria with my parents after they were done with their schooling. It was in Nigeria where I lived for 17 years that I fell madly in love with the arts. I started off dancing and grew madly in love with it. I would perform at every little block party you could imagine, lol… then I got into the visual arts and started off drawing and sketching. I remember once my mom refused to give me some pocket money to use to hang out with my friends, so I drew a storybook making her the villain in it, lol, and then handed it to her with such levity like “hey mom, look what I did” she laughed so hard. Even though at the moment I thought “what the heck” it definitely opened my eyes to the fact that my drawings impacted people.
I would continue dancing and drawing until I moved back to the states at age 17 and realized my dancing classically wasn’t where I’d love for it to be. So, I joined the Marines since my oldest brother was in the Air Force Academy I thought “hmm why not.” In the Marines, I got to visit places like Korea, Laos, Thailand, Okinawa, Fuji, Tokyo, Brisbane, Perth, Germany, etc. to name a few… it was this intersection of cultures I was exposed to that made me even more passionate about dance and the art since I now saw that there are so many other ways to express. I then auditioned for Debbie Allen LA and danced there till 2008, and culture-shock San Diego. In 2011 after 14 years, I left the Marines and moved back to Denver where I focused more on improving my dance and art and I have been blessed to dance and perform with different companies such as Moxie Luxe, Phantom Circus, MOTH poetic circus, Cleo Parker Robinson, Denver Dance, etc.
I have also been blessed and been able to showcase my artwork locally and internationally
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh wow… smooth is definitely not a word I would use to describe my journey… it’s been very challenging and there have been times when I question my voice and my abilities. My art is so different from what may be considered orthodox or the norm but I have simply believed that if I don’t have conviction in my work, then I can’t expect anyone to.
Opportunities don’t knock or present themselves, you make them. And so, I have found a way to improve on my skills but still wholeheartedly have a strong conviction in my voice and that, makes me tenacious.
What else should our readers know?
Well, Victor Adeniran art and dance is a company that is based on the arts. This ranges from visual arts which I do only represent my own work… to performing arts where I am hired to perform and I also do help people gather performers. In the past couple of months, I have helped scout performers for companies such as Moxie Luxe and Mathew Morris Salon both in Denver. I am mostly known for my visual artwork and performing floor dance and aerial dance.
What sets me apart are my techniques in both performing and visual arts. It isn’t always the most recognized but it certainly is different and true to me. My artworks mostly ink work, pastels and digital. A very rare way to make art but I love it and so I am finding ways to improve on that. My performance is always based on fun, soul and the combination of different styles meshed into one.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have had a lot of people believe in me Deena Marcum Selko who ones direct and put together the company MOTH poetic circus .. she introduced me to Cirque and has always been a mentor and supporter of mine. Kara Duepre who owns an immersive company and creative design company Moxie Luxe/Moxie creative, I have performed for that company so many times, she designed my website, helped put together my first art show. Natalie Brown who owns Phantom circus… being part of phantom circus has been quite a huge growth opportunity for me as she pushed the boundaries and forced me to do and excel at things I never tried before, Marguerite Endsley who owns Denver Dance allowed me to explore teaching more here in Denver as well as perform in her shows Aerial Assault, David Ratcliffe from Cleo Parker he has pushed me to be a better, more creative and adaptable dancer and performer. Kris Quint Who never fails to support me, and believe in me and love me unconditionally. Brad Parks always introduces me to anyone he thinks would be helpful and great for my marketing and his connections led to an awesome art showing through the month of May at Abraxas Studio at 910 n Santa Fe dr in Denver. Jonathan Cole who taught me most of the things I know in the aerial arts.
I know this may seem like a lot of people but I’m a firm believer that no man is an island and we must recognize all those who help us and are part of our growth… so to all those people, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️
