Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Bachus.
So, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started sculpting 13 years ago, originally to learn to make art for my garden. Two years later, I was completely hooked on making steel art. I started exhibiting in shows and making sales. I love creating one of a kind, unique indoor as well as outdoor yard art. Three years ago, I was diagnosed with heart disease, after open heart surgery I learned I could no longer weld or use a plasma cutter. I really thought my sculpture career was over, however, I had the opportunity to see a local exhibit of Alexander Calder, I was amazed by his gigantic sculptures which were bolted together rather than welded. I was able to change my focus and move toward a new direction and resume my sculpting.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it has not been smooth, as I mentioned, my heart surgery really set me back and it took me 18 months to refocus and move forward. I realized when I needed welding help, it was necessary to hire someone to weld for me, that took away some of the fun, however, I was able to move ahead.
What else should we know about your art?
I create both indoor as well as outdoor art, kinetic sculptures are my favorite projects. I get great satisfaction creating one of a kind hand made art. I have learned to take an inflexible steel material and create soft flexible shapes. I particularly enjoy melding masculine and feminine energies to form unique shapes. My love of beauty, the drive to create art which fulfills my soul and is a factor that helps complete me.
