Meet Chad Moore of Woods Boss Brewing Company in Five Points

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Moore.

Chad, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
These last several years have been an incredible journey of creativity, challenges and fulfillment. I am an entrepreneur at heart and am always thinking of new ideas on how to become more efficient, provide higher quality products and most importantly a better experience for customers. I have been, and still am in my day job, in technology specifically in the business development and operations side for years. Although I have a full time job, I constantly have the itch to create something and build something which is why I began discussions with Mmy now business partner, Jordan Fink about planning for a community-style brewery in in 2014. In 2015, my wife and I decided to take a sabbatical from our jobs in aerospace and software to outfit our truck and travel throughout South America for nine months. We shipped our truck to South America and traveled with our pup from Buenos Aires to Patagonia and up to Columbia, camping out of our truck. Along the way, I was in contact with Jordan, planning for the opening of Woods Boss Brewing Company upon my return. I returned in the spring of 2016 and started back at my position at Lockheed Martin and picked up the momentum of our brewery planning.

Our plan and eventually reality of opening a community brewery based around the concepts of creating a space for gatherings, celebrations and a comfortable place for everyone of all walks to enjoy the creativity of craft beer and friendships came to fruition when we opened August 11, 2017. We have 24 taps with 21 of those taps being different varieties of craft beer that we produce on site and the remaining consisting of a Gluten-Free option (From Holidaily Brewing), Kombucha and Root Beer. Our conscience decision to maintain so many options is to have something for everyone when they walk into our taproom. Everyone has a different palette and whether you like to drink a light lager, multiple styles of IPAs or something more robust like a porter, stout of one of our barrel-aged options, our intent is that you will find something you like and explore others along the way.

Our original business plan focused on the taproom as our primary efforts with a small amount of outside sales to craft beer bars and restaurants around the Denver area. That model was working great over the first several years until the COVID-19 impact beginning in March 2020. The city of Denver shut down all breweries and restaurants on March 16 through May 28 to all onsite service which was the main focus of our revenue source. Within several days we made the decision to begin canning our products to enable us to increase our offsite sales and continue to get our craft beers into the hands of our consumers both those who have supported us from day one through those who are just now finding out about our wide variety of styles.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been many obstacles/challenges along the way, some predictable, some not so much haha The homeless population in the Arapahoe Square/Five Points area has been a challenge for the city of Denver for longer than we have been there and we recognized that going into a downtown location we would need to work with the community to help in supporting the initiatives and coalitions to do our part in helping the community. One of the pillars we take seriously is our strive to give back, whether it is donating to non-profits in the areas of education, homelessness, forests and parks or simply providing a space for gatherings and non-profit events. We recognize that these are small aspects of what needs to take place but it is a small piece that we hope helps. The big unpredictable challenge is the obvious one, COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on our business and the community.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Woods Boss Brewing Company story. Tell us more about the business.
I already spoke to much of this in a previous response. We specialize in damn good beer. We get this question a lot however we like to think that craft beer is about exploring new styles, challenging ourselves to not only create a style to the original intent but also flexing the limits of that style and helping our customers understand and explore those styles with us. That is why we offer over 20 craft beers on tap and typically several barrel aged options at any given time. You may come in for your favorite IPA but our hope and offering is that you give a new style a try as well and join the adventure of craft beer with us.

I am most proud of the amazing staff and the environment and experience we provide at Woods Boss Brewing Company. I feel that we are unique in that we have created such a beautiful taproom experience for our customers to enjoy a variety of quality craft beers (Member of Colorado Proud; local sourced ingredients) if they choose to explore with a knowledgeable friendly staff.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Speaking of unpredictable… this industry is rapidly growing, changing and evolving every year and then with the impact of COVID there are some significant shifts and adjustments the industry is taking just to stay above water. This industry is creative and resilient and I have now doubt that we will continue to push each other to create better quality beers, new limits of styles and ways to adjust with the economic environment. I have so much respect for those within this industry and look forward to pushing the limits.
