Meet Yvonne Min

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Min.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Yvonne. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got started in photography about ten years ago. I was working as a financial analyst at Xcel Energy when I bought my first DSLR. I was so tired of trying to take images of my own little children and having the delay on the camera cause me to miss so many great shots. I eventually whined about it to my husband who suggested that I purchase a DSLR. At the time, I had no idea what that meant but I purchased a little entry-level Nikon.

A few months later, I was notified that my group at Xcel would be moving to Minneapolis and I was not willing to make that move so I took their severance package. My husband and I decided that I could have five years to see if I could launch a successful photography business, and much to everyone’s surprise, I did just that.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think that taking something you are passionate about as a hobby and turning it into a money-making venture is really difficult. Over the years, I have had to learn to separate myself from my images and not take criticism personally. It’s HARD for people to look at images of themselves. And it’s my job to ease that process so that they can relax and then, together, we can produce images that they love. I believe that everyone should have at least one photograph of themselves that they truly love.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My photography business focuses on portraiture. I adore faces. I specialize in family portraiture, high school senior portraiture and professional headshots. I believe my ability to connect with people and help them to relax is my greatest strength as a photographer. And having an arsenal of top-of-the-line equipment doesn’t hurt either.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Ah, the question of luck. I don’t know if I believe in either good luck or bad luck. I try to take whatever comes my way and use it to my advantage and find the positives. That said, I realize that I have been incredibly lucky to have a supportive spouse who encourages whatever crazy idea I happen to be playing with at the time. I am also so fortunate to be surrounded by friends who support my small business. I’m not sure it gets much better than being able to do something that you absolutely love and make money at it too.
