Meet Robbie Zev Goldsmith of Zev Wellness in Fort Collins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robbie Zev Goldsmith.

Robbie, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was 16 years old, a friend gave me a book on meditation that fascinated and spoke to me, which eventually led me to Naropa University, a small Buddhist-inspired school in Boulder. I studied Contemplative Psychology along with tai chi, yoga, nutrition, and other facets of healthy living. After graduating, I explored different types of massage, diets, exercise routines, and too many other habits to name that definitely caused my wife to think I’m a little crazy.

While focusing on this personal work for almost a decade, I also taught in Thailand for a year and a half, learning that I loved working with children and continuing that work in the Boston Public Schools. I ultimately decided that I wanted my passion to be my profession and enrolled in an amazing massage school. While attending, I knew that I had made the right choice and now feel lucky to do what I love every day. Helping people feel better, with less pain and tension is an incredible feeling.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s quite difficult for me to talk about, but in the middle of massage school, my neck was severely injured from a different hands-on profession. For years, life was quite challenging to say the absolute least! Years later, I am much better, thankfully – because I wasn’t sure I ever would be. Experiencing this has completely shaped my approach to hands-on work. I am a believer that you don’t need to wail on someone to do very effective deep technical work.

I also now understand that people can be experiencing insanely difficult circumstances and not wear it on their sleeves, and I treat every person that walks through my door with as much compassion as possible. Injuries and chronic pain suck and need to be approached in a specific way. If I can work as deeply and effectively as I want to, while also putting the person to sleep, that is a winning session.

Please tell us about Zev Wellness.
I specialize in back and neck (and increasingly hip) pain and discomfort. I blend deep tissue, neuromuscular, trigger point, cupping, and Swedish massage based on the goals of the person/particular day. An acute injury session will look very different than a neck tension relief session. I am very proud to blend deep technical work with a pace and methods that also allow for relaxation. Usually, it is one or the other, but I aim for both. Everyone really enjoys cupping as well, which utilizes suction to loosen up muscles quite quickly, which makes the deeper work more effective.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being a little kid and wrestling around with my father, or the shared uncontrollable laughter with friends in the middle of class that my teachers didn’t appreciate.
