Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Meek.
Hi Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Food has always been a big part of our family. My mother was an excellent cook and an especially talented baker. She died when I was 22 years old and it was at that point I started teaching myself how to make her recipes and learn how to cook and bake. Between my oldest son Grayson, who started to show a lot of interest being in the kitchen, and friends and family encouraging me to sell my cookies, that is when I decided to turn a hobby into a small business.
Gray and Chase (named after our sons) launched our first cookie sale Valentine’s Day 2021 and we have been nonstop since. We specialize in homemade custom-decorated sugar cookies for any occasion and offer monthly themed cookie boxes. I teach monthly beginner-level cookie decorating classes at the Highlands Ranch Library and you will occasionally see us at markets too!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I am a cardiac nurse so working full time, raising two children, and learning how to successfully run a small business has been hectic and stressful. The biggest struggle has been finding balance without losing my mind! I quit my full time as a nurse last August and took 3 months to regroup, focus on my cookie business, and most importantly spend extra time with my family. When I felt ready, I started a part-time nursing job which has been a blessing!! I now have the balance I need to stay sane and do all the things I want and need to do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I teach monthly cookie decorating classes. I instruct beginner-level decorating techniques for fun themes once a month at the Highlands Ranch Library.
Decorating sugar cookies allows me to create something delicious, satisfying, and pleasing to look at!!! I enjoy the creativity of coming up with new and different flavors of cookies and icing as well as creating art on cookies.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Learn from your mistakes and be patient. If you have the passion for what you are doing and you keep going, you will someday look back when you first started and marvel in your growth and success!
