Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Goodwin.

Kristin Goodwin

Hi Kristin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the tender age of ten, I made a declaration that would shape the trajectory of my life: I wanted to attend the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) and become a pilot. Little did I know then that this simple proclamation would set me on a path filled with triumphs, challenges, and the unwavering pursuit of my dreams.

Today, as Brigadier General (Retired), Kristin Goodwin, I reflect on my journey—a journey fueled by determination, resilience, and a commitment to leadership. From the moment I uttered those words to my parents, I was driven by an unshakeable desire to soar through the skies and serve my country.

While my parents both served our nation and supported my dreams, there were those who said that the military was no place for a woman and others who tried to convince me that women could not be combat pilots. Fortunately, I was both stubborn and determined. Despite the naysayers, I remained steadfast in my desire to attend the Air Force Academy and serve in the Air Force.

Four years after entering the academy, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, was commissioned as a lieutenant, and went on to pilot training. I was so excited and could not wait to get in the air and fly. That determination and excitement only grew stronger, propelling me forward through rigorous training and the demands of military life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As the years passed and I went on to fly nine different planes and become the first woman to command our nation’s largest Bomb Wing, Barksdale Air Force Base, I often reflected on how fortunate I was to be living my childhood dream. Yet my journey, like so many others, was not without its obstacles.

Along the way, I faced adversity in various forms—whether it was navigating the complexities of the military hierarchy, overcoming personal doubts and insecurities, or often being the only woman at the table. Through it all, my resolve helped me to remain unfaltering and draw on the strength from lessons learned and the camaraderie of my fellow servicemen and women.

As I ascended the ranks, I discovered true leadership extends far beyond the confines of rank or authority. It is about being bold, innovative, forward-thinking, and ready and willing to fight and defend what we believe in. Whether flying missions in the B-2 Stealth Bomber or commanding airmen and guardians on the ground, I learned the value of priorities during my first command position at Whiteman Air Force Base.

My mantra became: PEOPLE, MISSION, PRIDE. These priorities are universal and applicable to both military and civilian organizations. PEOPLE come first because they are our greatest asset. Nothing is more dynamic, creative, or resilient than the men and women serving this great nation and our organizations. They are the engine that drives us every day.

Our MISSION is important, whether it be developing leaders of character or relying on one another to produce the most innovative solution. We must never falter in developing our competitive advantage for the future. Lastly, we must always take PRIDE in what we do. PRIDE motivates us, it focuses us, and it inspires us to achieve more than we believe possible. PEOPLE, MISSION, PRIDE: these are three priorities that have shaped who I am as a leader.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One of the most defining moments of my career occurred when I received the prestigious appointment as Commandant of Cadets at the United States Air Force Academy. It was a humbling experience to lead the next generation of military officers— to instill in them the values of integrity, service, and excellence. As I observed the cadets, I experienced a deep sense of pride. I pride in knowing that they would be prepared to lead in an ever-changing and complex world.

My goal as a leader at the academy was to guide and inspire what would become our nation’s future leaders. As my military life reached retirement, I found myself starting a new chapter and facing an exciting set of opportunities. Transitioning from the structured world of the military to civilian life, I knew that I needed to find a renewed purpose—an inspiring way to continue serving others and making a difference in the world. It was then that I discovered my passion for executive and leadership coaching.

Drawing upon the lessons learned and the leadership skills honed throughout my military career, I founded my company, The Delta-v, with a singular mission: to empower individuals and organizations to reach their full potential. Through personalized coaching, workshops, and seminars, I help leaders change their velocity, unlock their inner strengths, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals.

My journey from aspiring pilot to executive and leadership coach has been marked by countless highs and lows, triumphs and setbacks. Yet through it all, my focus remains constant: empowering others, leading by example, and fostering a sense of camaraderie and trust. As I continue to guide others on their own paths to success, I do so with a sense of gratitude for the opportunities I have been afforded and a deep appreciation for the lessons along the way.

In the end, my journey is not just about achieving personal success, it’s about inspiring others to reach for the stars, to pursue their dreams with passion and determination, and to never lose sight of the values that define true leadership. And as I look to the future, I do so with optimism and excitement, knowing that the best is yet to come.
