Today, we’d like to introduce you to Rashod McKay, Jr.
Hi Rashod, I am so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started this journey to create spaces for Black people and People of Color in Colorado. Funny story, I started this company in my college apartment during my sophomore year of college during spring break. I found myself watching Insecure (Shoutout Issa Rae) and I had the same idea of creating a festival in Colorado that would’ve had vendors and different artists.
Then, the more I started to look into it, I found out that’s everywhere in Colorado. Then, I begin to ask myself “Where are the safe spaces for Black people?” Then it expanded to “Where are the safe spaces for all Black people and People of Color?” I then took the time and created LaFynk into what it is now and where it is expanding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a journey, There have been many struggles. Every business owner understands it. I have been learning how to expand this journey of LaFynk really by myself. I haven’t been able to see this done before. A lot of my resources have been from watching shows about creating these spaces or they are in other states. So, there’s not a guide to do this and as a creative, things are not so simple to execute unless you have the resources.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
LaFynk specializes in curating spaces for Black people and People of Color. This entails creating mental health spaces, music spaces, networking spaces, as well as hosting various events. LaFynk functions as a PR agency, management company, and production company. Eventually, I envision LaFynk producing films and TV shows, managing brands and artists, and aiding in the expansion of these brands and artists to the heights they deserve. I feel that it is important to recognize that I am still starting out in my career and this journey. I am really proud about where LaFynk is going overall. I am thankful to my friends and my amazing team for helping me to get to where LaFynk is at now. Honestly has kept me going on this journey.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very shy in person. I was afraid of talking to people. I was an awkward kid, and probably still am lol. I wanted everything in the world. I wanted to be everything in the world. I did not have a lot of friends growing up. I was an outcast kid. Until I discovered social media, I developed a huge internet personality. I started to be less shy in person and started to have a lot of things to say in person. I grew up with my grandmothers and my mother; I always love to say Black women raised me, and I am very thankful for that. They always taught me that my ideas mattered and I could do anything in this world. My mother actually tried to direct my attention to sports, but she knew I was destined to do other things. Overall, Growing up was an experience because a lot of my idols were something that my family thought was unattainable, but I wanted to prove them wrong at such an early age.
