Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyanne Mateo.
Hi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you for having me! I moved out to Colorado about 2 years ago from a small town in Connecticut, for a job as an industrial hygienist, since I have an A.S in environmental engineering technology. I kind of listened to edm but I was bigger into heavy metal and reggae. When I moved out here, my first show ever was Cyclops Rocks I and my friends I made here introduced me into all the different aspects and culture of edm I never really knew existed. I was taken out to our clubs like Church & Temple, where I met local djs and producers, networked with everyone I met, and eventually somehow knew everyone everywhere. I got into a car accident December 2021, which made me unable to work construction anymore, so after a while, I decided to join the street team for Blackspy Marketing doing promo for CoClubs and eventually working my way to work with other companies and promote events like AEG & LiveNation. I moved to LA June 2022 where I started working as a TIME Nightclub Ambassador and quickly worked my way up to promoting for all Insomniac SoCal clubs, and around September I moved back to Denver, where it felt more like home. I still work for insomniac as an ambassador, but I accepted a position becoming artist management for SOLI USA and a booking agent for a few others friends out here in Colorado, have to use those networks and connections eventually, and it’s worked out great so far! I’m a woman wearing many hats!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way.
Honestly, I believe the biggest challenges I’ve had were being a bubbly female in this cutthroat male dominated industry, and being so new to Colorado, and coming up as fast as I did, made it difficult for people to give me credit or chances when I first started out. It’s not just about timing in this industry, it’s also about who you are as a person, how you treat others and honestly, about who you know to get started. Coming back to Denver from LA, it’s a more welcoming scene here, but we still have problems in both cities where people gate-keep information and show bookings, and that’s not very PLUR (peace, love, unity, respect) of people. I strive to help anyone who asks me as much as I can, because homies help you get to where you are and build your brand up, and who knows, one day it could come back and benefit you more than you’ll ever know.
Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some parts of my journey have seemed smooth or easy, sometimes a little too easy haha, but it’s all about working hard. If you love what you do and you want to grow in whatever industry, wouldn’t you push yourself past your known limits and challenge and unknown to reach your ultimate goal? I will say, there have been times I felt defeated I wasn’t going anywhere and kept asking myself why did I do this, and then I finally see the progress and success and it’s like a sigh of relief, that I KNOW I can do this, I KNOW I can succeed for me and my clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So recently, I have accepted a Marketing Coordinator Assistant position with Blackspy Marketing. Blackspy was the first company I officially did promo work for and have been working with them for a little over a year now. After a few months of doing promo work for CoClubs shows, I was asked to take on bigger shows, in exchange for comp tickets, like AEG and LiveNation, at venues including Red Rocks, Mission Ballroom and the Fillmore. Thanks to Blackspy, I was able to hit 8 Red Rocks shows last year alone. I might have an environmental engineering degree, but social media management and marketing I just have a natural knack for and fell in love doing it over the past year, so being offered that assistant position, I honestly cried. If you told me a year or two ago this is where I would be and what I would be doing, I wouldn’t believe you. I’m very grateful to those that have accepted me and taken a chance on me to prove myself. I also recently was asked to help choose support for DJ TOPGUN at Larimer Lounge on 2/25 so in spirit of helping the homies, those who love to play and just needed a chance to be heard, I submitted their names and let’s just say, the show must go on there’s something about helping choose support and being able to curate events in my community to help the underdogs be heard who are never given a chance and that’s why I’m here to help.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I believe happiness comes not just from within, but from those you surround yourself with. Positive energy attracts positive energy and I’ve learned that throughout my short time in this industry. I started 2023 in kind of a dark spot and quickly realized this will be my year, and it has! I’ve met the most amazing people and friends anyone could ever have and I feel so very lucky to have them in my life. A lot of things make me happy from pizza to lazy Sunday recovery days ordering Thai food, but what really does it for me, is being able to help my friends in any way I can, help them get show bookings, put them on the map, bring new and fresh talent to a saturated scene and give people a chance to showcase their talent and sounds. I want to see my homies thrive because they deserve it and if that means I can help them, hit up my networks and connections, I’ll be the first one there.
