Travis, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Travis Hawkes Media originated from a lifelong passion for videography and storytelling. It started with a childhood interest in movies and good stories. I would spend days messing around with my friends, creating home videos and editing on iMovie. The idea that I could do this for a living began during a year where I was living in Australia, living out of a van and road tripping around the country. I started creating travel videos then, and really fell in love with it. After moving back to the US, I worked at a startup in LA, juggling roles in sales and marketing while fuelling my growing passion for video by creating social media content on the side.

Fast forward to 2020, I was hit with a curveball when the startup suddenly shut down. That moment felt like a crossroads, and I decided to turn my passion into my profession. That’s how Travis Hawkes Media was born. Now based in Denver, Colorado, we focus on crafting brand stories, documentaries, and short-form content that help businesses and non-profit organizations connect genuinely with their audience through story-driven video. It’s all about creating videos that don’t just look good but make a real impact. I feel super lucky to do what I love every day, helping brands tell their stories in the most impactful way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but then again, the most rewarding paths often aren’t. One of the biggest challenges has been my own self-critique; for the first three years or more, I was rarely satisfied with my work. I would have a specific thing in my mind, and the final product, although good, wasn’t quite what I saw in my mind. It’s only recently that I’ve started to genuinely appreciate my work.

Balancing the creative aspects with the business side of things has also been a steep learning curve. This industry demands a certain level of scale, especially when you handle both the filming and the editing. It’s like conducting an orchestra and playing an instrument at the same time!

Another challenge has been pricing. There’s a tendency in the video production field to undervalue our work, which I struggled with initially. Learning to price our services appropriately was crucial, not just for the sustainability of the business but to reflect the quality and effort of the work we deliver.

Overcoming these challenges has taught me resilience and the importance of continuous learning. Every hurdle has been a stepping stone towards refining our operations and improving our storytelling capabilities

The key to my success has been a combination of leadership, a constant thirst for knowledge, and a robust network. Good leadership has allowed me to scale Travis Hawkes Media, and work with super talented teams.

I’m committed to personal and professional growth, embracing the philosophy of making daily incremental improvements—this mindset keeps me adaptable and forward-thinking.

And most importantly – having a strong network. I’m blessed to be connected to, and work with amazing mentors and colleagues – this is really invaluable. They’ve provided support, advice, and opportunities that have significantly contributed to my journey. This blend of leadership/scaling, continuous learning, and community support truly sets the foundation for our success and allows us to deliver exceptional value to our clients
