Meet JayDubb ThaRuler of KSTG ENT in Colorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to JayDubb ThaRuler.

JayDubb, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey for music started when I was ten years old when I picked up my first instrument. Starting with the trumpet, I also learned to play the french horn, saxophone, and percussion. Poetry was something I picked up when I was in High School and even got to the point where one of my poems was published back in 2008. I won an award for my poem for its originality and received my award in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2009, my best friend, Travis Moore, died from Cancer and it took a toll on me. Lost interaction with a lot of people, I struggled to focus mentally, the only thing I wanted to do was write down our memories or go for a walk listening to all of our favorite songs. In 2010, I started fusing the two together, my ability to write and connect with a beat. I recorded my first few songs on a home computer the Summer of 2010, but it wasn’t until March of 2011 when I recorded my first studio song called “Blasphemy” featuring The UpperClassMen. My artistry grew while I was in college from 2010-2016.

During that time I silently completed four different mixtapes, but only released two because I wasn’t pleased with my growth and delivery. Since I’ve started I have worked with numerous people: Flo-logics, Ty Klass, Swift, T-Wayne, BubbaUno, AlexDaGreat, Doobie Newton, Chopsquad DJ, Caskey, Lil Durk, & T-Rell. I have done shows in California, Florida, Colorado, and Germany. Music is my passion and even though I listed all these things above I still feel like I am barely getting started.

Has it been a smooth road?
If there was a smooth road to music I didn’t find it. Working with groups had its ups and downs. Running into bad promoters, fake marketers, scammers, and labels trying to trap me in 360 deals is all a part of the game. But the biggest battle I’ve had has been with myself.

Not releasing music because of the fear of what others thought about my music is a reason why my public catalogue isn’t as big as the files I have saved on all the hard drives I have. Trying to get acceptance from the people that surrounded me was something I valued for a long time and I wanted to cater to them and their taste in music, but in the end I wasn’t happy because it wasn’t what I wanted to make. I started putting my thoughts and feelings into my music how I wanted to and I started seeing the results I wanted to as well.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Music is all that I am about for my business. I sell clothing as well, but music is my thing and what I have been building for the last decade.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
There is a market for music here, but it is not as big as it is on the east coast, south, or the west coast. I would not recommend someone that is just getting into music to start here if they are trying to make it big. There are way too many things that can hold you back here in Colorado because the outlet for Rap/Hip-Hop music isn’t dominant here. I could say that it is growing here, but having connections in surrounding places like New York, Houston, Atlanta, or Los Angeles might actually put you in a position you would want to be in.
