Meet Laura Lieff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Lieff.

Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, I grew up in the music business. My family founded and operated a chain of record stores in Florida for 50 years and music has always been a big part of my life. When we weren’t working, we took family trips out west. After spending so much time in the mountains, I knew that’s where I wanted to go to college. In 2002, I moved to Colorado to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I earned my BA in English. While at CU, I wrote for two newspapers, a publicity company, and a band booking agency.

After graduation, I moved to Denver and began working as a reporter for the Glendale Cherry Creek Chronicle newspaper. Over the years I was promoted to Content Editor and then to Executive Editor. After seven years, I resigned from the Chronicle and moved to the Vail Valley where I run my own business, Lieff Ink, which offers freelance writing, editing, and PR for a variety of clients. In addition to working diligently for my clients, I’m a Writing Tutor at Colorado Mountain College and a College Essay Consultant for Vail Mountain School. On Friday nights, I host a radio show called Bite the Bullet on 107.9 Radio Free Minturn.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I was fortunate to know exactly what I wanted – to be a professional writer – when I was in high school. Having that drive early on helped me start taking the necessary steps to reach my goal soon after arriving at CU. When I graduated, everyone told me that because the newspaper/magazine business was plummeting I would never find a job. It took some time, but I was glad to prove them wrong when I was hired as a reporter at 23 years old.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
Everyone needs a skilled writer to ensure they are effectively getting their message across, whether that’s through website content, bios, press releases, or article submissions for media outlets. I handle the writing, editing, and PR for all facets of my clients’ businesses. I have also been working with college students since January 2014. I help them brainstorm ideas, workshop their papers, and assist with their essays from inception to final product. What sets me apart is that, because of my experience in both publishing and academics, I can write or edit anything I’ve given.

What were you like growing up?
Because I grew up in the record business, music has always meant a lot to me. Over the years I’ve written countless articles about music, I have had the opportunity to see a wide array of artists at a variety of venues, and I continue to showcase that passion through my weekly radio show. I also love the outdoors – especially hiking with our pups, biking with our 11-month-old son, and snowboarding with Brian, my partner in everything.
