Thanks for sharing your story with us Miranda. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The idea of going to esthetician school came up in a car ride with an old friend one day at the age of 17 or 18, I can’t remember, but the minute that conversation was over I knew I would be entering a whole new journey. I took school seriously, I came in early and stayed late. I graduated in four months and went straight to the phone book to look for jobs LOL. For four years, I worked for salons, I gave my business card to anyone and everyone and started to learn more and more with each salon. In 2008 I started Denver Waxing with no clientele and gave out 50% off services just to get clients in the door. Within six months, I used the money I had, hired a Seo and was on the top page of Google and had a clientele like you wouldn’t believe. I see about 15 clients a day and I believe that it’s about ambition in this industry, putting yourself out there and having to be willing to be efficient with each service you provide.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say that it’s been a peaceful road. There were nights I left work crying because I overworked myself or clients didn’t respect my time and they threaten me by writing bad reviews because I put up boundaries. It’s been difficult knowing your worth and constantly questions your value and wondering how much should I charge, should I take another client on even though I’m completely exhausted, should I bend over backward just to please someone?. I also have made some big financial decisions just to make sure I was on top of the trend. You never want to feel like you are falling behind, especially in the beauty industry. This industry is always changing and you can never outgrow it (which can be a good thing and a bad thing).
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Denver Waxing – what should we know?
I love this question! I wax all day long! I do a ton of male and female Brazilian waxes. I have specialized in these services for almost 15 years and for clients to tell me it’s the least painful wax they had or I have made them feel comfortable for their first wax just fills my heart with joy or getting text after their services to tell me they can’t wait to see me again is the greatest feeling. The other thing I’m known for is being a brow artist, I too specialize in brow waxing.
My proudest moments is this, I worked with a celebrity brow artist Kelley Baker back in March who works on the Kardashians, Cardi B, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Lucy hale, Lea Michelle and a whole bunch of others. We spent the whole day working on clients together, how to expand on social media and connecting through we love to do. I flew out to Santa Monica to work with her. I also got some training from another brow artist who is extremely well known on Instagram… brows by-liz in Laguna beach last June and did the same thing. Did nine hours of training and connecting through waxing. Coolest experiences I ever had. These women showed me everything to know about how to shape every brow client that comes my way. What separates me from others is I’ll keep doing training, I’ll spend money to get the best education and tools. I’m a one women show and I have no desire to expand and the reason for that is because I think, for me it’s important to stay close to clients and stay focus on the services I provide and not lose sight of that.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being humble. Also, recognizing the talent and to use that through kindness. It’s my job to get out of self and make sure clients are being taken care of not just through their service but that they feel part of.
