Today we’d like to introduce you to Darla Colinet.
Darla Colinet
Hi Darla , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I know what it is like to be transformed from a caterpillar to a butterfly. I’m embracing the opportunity to enjoy my gift of painting from God has filled my heart during the later season of my life. I marvel at the beauty all around me and the transformation He has brought to my mind, heart, spirit, and life.
I was born in America, but I grew up in Iran under the care of our maid because my mom suffered from mental illness, and my dad was in the Air Force. I grew up believing I needed a bodyguard and iron bars to protect me. Once we moved to America, I discovered what it truly meant to be free.
However, as time went on and I endured more trauma, I found myself in the middle of my first abusive marriage. We all start off learning what is in front of us and creating the values and beliefs we form from our experiences, messages, and role models. Sometimes, we don’t realize what we learned and practiced is unhealthy. We try to figure things out and often trade up, but we will keep being unhealthy until we learn what is healthy and right.
After my third abusive marriage, I cried out to God to help me understand what I was getting wrong. I started studying God’s word, and He revealed his definition of love. As I learned and walked in his healthy love, I experienced pure, healthy love. I wrote several books about my journey from abuse to a healthy, thriving life. I also wrote a book to help people explore their definition of love and how it affects their relationships. I know everything that I went through was used by God to help hundreds of women I’ve met who were also confused about love.
After this healing season in my life, I feel led to embrace my passion for art and renew my awe of God’s creation. I am blessed to see how God exchanged my ashes for beauty while he helped me encourage others along the way. I aim to encourage others with my art as I bring God glory and honor for his gift.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
During the height of my abusive marriages I suffered from an art block. After going through counseling, I understood how others tried to exploit my gift. After being free from my abuse and opening my arms to my Creator’s gift, it came back.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Not only do I love to capture the image of one of God’s creations on canvas, I love to do this through watercolor, pastel chalk, acrylics, and oils. They provide such diverse mediums I can use to capture the essence of what I see. My gift is seen in my love for capturing the details in my florals, animals, and landscapes. Each one holds an essence waiting to be discovered in the subject’s eyes, textures, layout, and colors. I convey a story in each picture for each viewer to enjoy.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
We all need each other’s encouragement, accountability, and love. Reach out to the ones you love and tell them specifically why you love them. We are not promised tomorrow so make the most of today and be present!
