Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Brenna Hatami.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was a gymnast growing up and always into health and wellness. I discovered traveling and yoga out of college and got into macrobiotics. I was looking for my next step when I met with a career counselor who had me take a Myers Briggs test. The results came up high for a physician but I was hesitant because already I was thinking differently about health and healing. This counselor recommended I look into Naturopathic Medicine. I did and I was hooked. My passion for health and the philosophy of healing really aligned with my personal experience. I started working for some naturopathic doctors here in Denver as a receptionist and started taking pre-med courses and went to school a few years later.
When I got out of school, I worked for another ND here in Denver then started my own practice. I have been practicing ever since. I also teach yoga and run a yoga teacher training program with my husband.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having your own business is not always a smooth road! You should be prepared financially and mentally for times that are slow. You will get to know the ebb and flow of your business. I think the best advice is to stay true to yourself and know that the right people will come to you.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Working as a Naturopathic Doctor is very rewarding. I love to hear the story of people’s lives. Each person’s journey is unique and how they heal and grow is unique too.
My specialty is to help women lose weight. I help them address the underlying causes of weight loss, addressing inflammation, hormone imbalance, digestive issues, fatigue, and poor sleep are some of the main causes I see.
After you address these, then you can move forward with a comprehensive weight loss plan that is designed to help women lose fat and not muscle. It is based on whole foods, healthy eating, portion control and balancing blood sugar. It isn’t a quick fix but a long term understanding of what each persons body needs.
It has been rewarding to help women really achieve this goal and do it in the spirit of self-care, rather than a punishment.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I feel like women are the future for health care. They are inherently good listeners, compassionate and lead by example. Whether as a nurse, a social worker, a therapist or a doctor, women have so much to offer in this field.
Our current mainstream model of health care lacks a women’s touch.
